| Hi,
I just finished reading the chapter on Auditing and noticed that the lab walked me through setting up policies using the Group Policy MMC Snap-in rather than the Local Security Policy.
I was just wondering if there is a difference between using the Group Policy and Local Security Policy. I know that I can apply the Group Policy to an AD object but what if my computer is not part of an AD domain.
Thanks for any clarification you guys can provide.

| The group Policy is only available on a computer where Active Directory is installed and effects all computers in the group to which it is attatched. The local Policy is for the local computer and only effects the computer on which it is on. You can use the local Policy on a computer in Active Directory to set policy settings that are specific to this computer. This policy would be overwritten by Policy changes in the group policy, but if the policies do not match then the settings from the local policy will be used. Policies run in the following order
Local - Site - Domain - OU
and are overwritten in that order.

| Actually there is Group Policy on Windows 2000 Pro and XP. It can be used to setup policies which only affect the local users and local machine. | |
