I have decided to persue MCSE certification and would like a little advice on what study materials are recomended. I have alot of experience supporting Windows 98 in a small network at work, but have not really used Windows 2000 products. I have used Windows NT for a couple of years, but have not had to implement many changes to the existing server.

I have two computers to use as a lab, one with the advanced server 2000 evaluation and one with windows 2000 pro. I fumbled through setting up Active Directory and it is now up and running. I have read through New Riders Training guide for 70-210, but seem to be having retention issues. Where can I find lots of practice exercises so I can get hands on experience? Are there any books that only have practice exercises? Also, I see so many "practice exams", are practice exams the best way to learn the material? Any good basic articles to help me understand NTFS permissions better? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks;

First of all, welcome to ExamNotes. You will find the people here are more than willing to assist you in your pursuits.

As for study materials, the MOC's from Microsoft are really good. Sybex has some good books too, most come with practice exams on CD. But for good articles on permissions, try http://www.microsoft.com/technet/, Microsofts website for IT professionals.

This link gives more information on Share permissions:

Lastly, keep practicing with your lab, hands-on is always the best!

Hello,
Seems you have a good experience with Windows. The most important thing for your success will be the good heands on experience with Windows 2000. If you can setup a home lab this will be just great.

Some people like Sybex, some like MS Press or New Riders. It will be dificult to say which book is better. Propably you can try two different study guides to suplement each other.

A great source of info is TechNet. IMO, most of the material for the exams is on TechNet. Just perform your searches and you'll find the answers for almost all of the scenarios in the exam.

You can try some good practice exams too. Theese will make you more confortable with the test and will teach you how to think in a MS way. This is very helpful as you need to understand what exactly they want to ask you IMO, the best practice exams are Transcender and EasyCert. You can try their demos to decide which one best feets your needs.

Good luck!

For hands on labs, I would recommend the Microsoft self paced study books. They contain some pretty good labs to do after each chapter to help reinforce what you learn in the chapter.

As far as using practice exams, I wouldn't use them to learn the material, but rather to help reinforce what you learn from reading/studying the books. I have used beachfront quizzer in the past and found them to be decent. I've also used transcender and think that they are just a bit better than beachfront.

Also, the others give great advice as far as using microsoft's technet site to do further research/studying on topics that the books you have may not cover sufficiently.

http://www.microsoft.com/mspress/bo...pchap/6103a.asp is a sample chapter from a Microsoft book. It covers NTFS permissions pretty well.

I also agree that the best use for the practice exams is to leave them until you feel that you understand all of the areas of study. If you use them too early then you will not get a true idea of how prepared you are for the exam as some of your answers will be based on having seen the question and answer before.

there's no substitute for knowing the subject.

Also - I would recommend only going by recognised testpreps - 'cause there are quite a few sites out there with Q&As where the answers are wrong!!

Get a good practice exam and then search TechNet or your book to read more info about the particulat scenarious. This will help you understand the topics more clearly. Try EasyCert, Exam Essentials or Transcender - they are all good.
