| hi ppl, i have 1 running XP pro and the other W2K pro. Both are connected to LAN using the DHCP. When I unplugged the cable and i set the static IP, i do a ipconfig and it says media disconnected. The static ip is not shown. Do i need to plug my cable to the network before i configured the static IP?

| You don't need to to disconnect the network cable. Just change the setting so it knows it has a static IP and doesn't try to get it via DHCP. You may want to do an inpconfig /release first. | |

| It's strange, whenever W2k Pro or XP pro, plus the server versions, have their network cabl;es unplugged, they totally disable the network card, it can be annoying, because I sometime map drive to shares on my PC from my PC, and if I don't have a network connection, they become disabled.
there might be a registry hack to turn this sort of thing off.

What do you mean by mapping drive to shares on your PC from your PC?
Anyway, Microsoft Loopback Adapter might be the solution you're looking for. | |

for example:
On your C:\ you create a folder named Netshare.
Then share that folder by right clicking and sharing.
Then through Network Places you browse the Network, locate your computer. In there you will see Netshare folder.
Then right click on it and choose map network drive. Select the driver letter you want. ex: z:
You will now have mapped to Netshare on C:\ as Z:\

| Disabling media sense might be what you are looking for and M$ describes how to do it as well as the effects in KB article 239924.
