| I am hoping the I can get some assistance and some guidance from the good people in this forum in helping me resolve this problem.
I am trying to do a clean install Win2k Pro on my pc but it keeps freezing during the install. When I attempt to start it in safe mode it shows me that the installation is being aborted as soon as the file Mup.sys is loaded. What is this file and how can I get around it. My system is a Pentium 3 733, 256 Mb RAM,10 Gig hd. The only hardware components installed are cd rom, savage reality AGP graphics card (which I know is fine cause I checked it in another system)the pci slots are empty and there are no usb devices. Please note that I was experiencing the same problems when i loaded Win Xp as well as win 98. With Win Xp, the insatllation freezes at the 'Knight Rider screen' where the blue dotted bar runs across the screen. With win98, the gui is loaded but seconds after the system hangs/freezes. I have updated the bios, checked the memory, switch the hd, checked the fan..still nothing. The only OS the that loads onthis system is win95 Any suggestions???? ANYONE!!!!!!!!

| Start the Recovery console or..
Start the computer with the boot disks or Windows CDROM
After the Welcome to Setup dialog box appears, press R to repair, and then press C to start Recovery console.
Choose install Windows and log on as Administrator.
At the command prompt type "disable Mup.sys"
"MUP stands for "Multiple UNC Provider" which assists Windows in locating resources when more than one redirector is on a machine such as "Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks" and the "Novell Client for Novell Netware". When a connection to a server is requested it does not know if the request is to a Novell server or an NT server. It will start looking for the server with the primary protocol on the primary requestor and then continue looking for the server on each protocol bound to each redirector until the server is found."
Restart the computer and all should be well.
I found this

| Dejuice,
The problem is most likely caused by a USB card, a USB device, or another PCI card. If you currently have a USB card, pull that out. Or when you get the error, try to pull any USB devices (scanner, printer, mouse, etc.) and see if the system will continue to boot.
Hope that helps...
Oh yeah, MUP stands for "Multiple UNC Provider."
Oh, it looks like DaPunisher has already explained that one.

| Is there anything built onto the motherboard?
Are you using a USB keyboard or mouse?
Have you tried disabling USB?
Cheers,

Any other PCI cards? NIC? Have you made any hardware changes recently? Upgraded BIOS? Make sure to check your BIOS settings. Set to PnP OS, and that IRQ's are managed by ESCD. If you have it set to non-PnP OS, or if IRQ management is set to manual, an IRQ conflict could result with your NIC (or modem). Mup.sys will often cause a hang when it's loaded, because it tries to access your network connections and will cause an IRQ conflict with the other device.
Hope that helps... | |

| There is no NIC card, no modem no pci devices..the only hardware is hd, floppy,cd rom, and a agp video card (I have tried using other video cards and still nothing. The sound card is integrated onto the mb. I did flash the bios with the latest update. How do ensure that my IRQs are managed by ESCD??? I am not seeing that option in my bios!!
Like I said...win95 works fine but XP,2k,win98 se...nada.

| Is your video card either on of these models?
Reality 332
Reality 771
If not, this may be your problem, as these are the only two on the W2K HCL, for that company anyway. Then, it could be something else. Just trying to help. |
