Just out of curiosity, have people found the MS self paced training kits to be better than the Sybex books?

Also, does the MOC tend to cover more material than the self-paced training kits or still basically the same? If I recall from my past usage of the MOC, they seemed pretty close to what is found in the self-paced kits. Thanks...

Other text suggestions?

I like the MS Self paced training books better than the Sybex offerings, but that is just my opinion. They are similar in material to the MOC binders you get in class.

As for other books, the New Riders offerings are pretty solid.

Best of luck in your studies.

Thanks Spid.

Well, I will take that under advisement. By the New Riders, I assume that you are referring to the older 70-210 book that has been out for quite a while?

I think all the newer "New Rider" books are now published under the Que name, if I am correct.

Thanks for the luck. I am trying to find the time/motivation to get going on a long overdue upgrade, here so I can be on the same page when the 2003 track exams are up and rolling.....

I can't speak for the MOC's since I don't use them, but as far as the Self-paced training kits, I would have to say that they are better than the Sybex books. The only caveat that I see is the corrections to the books. Sometimes the books get printed with wrong info, like some misprints in the labs, etc.

will allow you to search the book's ISBN and get all the corrections.

Thanks for the tips and link,shanghai_12b. Well, I have the MS self-paced core kit second edition here, so hopefully it will not have too many corrections. Although, I remember that the first edition had a pretty large errata list!

In the past I have preferred non MS texts, because the MS books trend to be soooo dry and don't cover the material completely. Then again what does with Win2K, besides the Resource kit? A nice 7000 page read!

Anyway, what have you found as a good complement to the MS books, aside from of course, hands-on?

Well, the MS MOC bindersa that you get in class look essentially identical to the MS self paced books except they come in a loose leaf binder. I suspect that they are identical, but just marketed differently. I compared one with the self poaced book and it seemed if not identical, very close.

Anyway, thanks for the tip. If you have any other suggestions to get me to kick start my studying, I would appreciate it. Thanks....

Yes, hands-on goes a big way in helping pass the Win2k track of exams.

Here's my normal routine:
- Read through the MOC or Self Paced Training kit and work through the labs.

- Read through any MS Whitepapers to get a better grasp on subject material. Here's a real nice link to most, if not all of the MS whitepapers you might need to read for all of the exams.
http://www.chapo.co.il/Articles/Microsoft/Whitepapers/

- I use the Transcenders practice tests when I'm ready to really start gearing up for the exam. I then reference the MS knowledgebase for any questions I got wrong or need more clarification with.

- Repeat the above steps as necessary until I have a real good comfort level with exam objectives.

Thanks again, Spid. That seems like a pretty good game plan, especially considering the certs you have!

I also have the CBT nuggets series of videos which seem to do a good job covering the objectives, plus they work through the scenarios on a Win2K Pro box or Server depending on the exam. It is essentially working through labs and hands on at the same time. Plus you can follow along on your own machine as well, if you like.

I am just not sure if I learn better with videos, or just books and hands-on etc. Also, not 100% sure if the videos are sufficient coverage.

Anyway, what I HAVE learned in the past, is the best study tool is probably setting a date for the exam, booking and paying for it. It is interesting just how much of a motivator to learn that can be! Now, if I can just get the motivation to book the exam, lol!

Thanks again for the insight.
