Here's an article I found.
http://networking.earthweb.com/neto.../10951_600351_1

It touches on .sif files on the 2nd page.

when performing an unattended install you have to change the unattend.txt to winnt.sif or else it won't work.

This may give you a clearer view of what an Answer file is:

quote:
An answer file is a customized script that answers the Setup questions without requiring user input. The Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM contains a sample answer file that you can modify and use. The answer file is usually named Unattend.txt, but you can rename it to anything you want. You should rename it if you are using multiple answer files to deploy different client configurations. For example, Desktop.txt, Laptop.txt, and Sales.txt are all valid names for an answer file, as long as those names are correctly specified in the Setup command. By renaming the answer file, you can build and use multiple answer files if you need to maintain different scripted installations for different parts of your organization.

The answer file tells Setup how to interact with the distribution folders and files that you have created. For example, in the [Unattend] section of the answer file there is an OEMPreinstall entry that tells Setup to copy the $OEM$ subfolders from the distribution folders to the target computer.

Answer File Format
You can create answer files in any text editor, including Notepad. They follow a format that is similar to other types of Windows configuration files:

; lines that begin with a semicolon are comments and are ignored by Setup.
[section name]
key1=value
key2="value with embedded spaces"

Answer files have many sections corresponding to different categories of information, and each section contains individual keys.

The winnt.sif file is used when installing W2K from the W2K CD-Rom. This is where you would change the unattended answer file name to winnt.sif, saved on a floppy. When the W2K install is started from the CD, the winnt.sif file located on the floppy is used for the unattended installation.

Hope this helps.
