In a Domain environment, what is the purpose of DNS?

I understand that it converts IP Address to Domain Names on the Web.

How does it do it in a Domain Environment?
Does it convert hosts to IP Addresses?

I noticed that I can ping one of my work stations, "W2k11" by name, and 192.168.1.20 ip. I dont have dns installed, just yet.

What type of names exactly does dns work with????????????

Host name to IP = DNS

Computer Name to IP = WINS
