Hi all,
I am gotting this error message while I am booting my dual-boot system (Windows2000 pro and Windows Me) starting Windows 2000 pro:

-----
<windows 2000 root> \system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file
-----

I did the following actions:
1) I deleted the ntoskrnl.exe file then I boot the system with setup disk and go to the Recovery Console, then I made a copy the NTOSKRNL.EX_ file to the D:\WINNT\SYSTEM32. after that I changed the NTOSKRNL.EX_ file to NTOSKRNL.EXE
2) I got the ntoskrnl.exe from the second computer which had the windows 2000 server instaled, coping to the D:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 folder.

How can I re-install a copy of the ntoskrnl.exe????

Thanks
Neka

NTOSKRNL.EX_ is compressed, you can not just rename it NTOSKRNL.EXE

In the Recovery Console interface you need to use the "Expand" command to expand the NTOSKRNL.EX_ file from the Windows 2000 CD to the proper location on your Hard Drive.

The command would go something similar to the following:

Expand E:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ D:\WINNT\system32

where E: is your CD-Rom Drive and D:\WINNT is where you installed Windows 2000 to.

Here's a list of all the command that you can use while in the Recover Console interface http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;229716

Hope this helps.

Spid,
I can't solve this problem with "Recover Console". Do I have to re-install Windows 2000 pro?

Well, the ntoskrnl file is either corupt or gone OR your Boot.ini file arc paths are not pointing to the correct location.

Have you tried booting your computer up with the Windows 2000 CD and after Setup starts, selecting "R" to Repair your installation? If you created an ERD previously, that would help too, but you still might be able to recover without it.

I decided to reinstall the Windows, so I deleted the WINNT folder. then install the Windows again. just tell me what should I delete the entry of the old Windows from the boot menu? Do I have to modify boot.ini? How? (I have now Windows ME, old Windows2000 pro and the Windows2000 pro which I recently installed on the boot menu).

Thank you

Please attach a copy of your current boot.ini file so I can take a look at it.

From what I can gather by looking at your boot.ini file, it looks like you should only have 2 entries in your bootmenu.

Windows Me is installed on your C: drive under the c:\windows directory and Windows 2000 Professional is installed on the 2nd partition of the first IDE hard drive in the WINNT directory. Your bootmenu timeout is set for 30 seconds with Windows 2000 Professional being the default OS to boot into if you do not make a selection within the 30 seconds.

I don't really see a need to have to edit the boot.ini file, it looks like it is setup properly for your dualboot system.

If you have to, you can edit the boot.ini file with any text editor. But with your current boot.ini file, I can't see why you would have 3 entries in your boot menu.

Best I can tell you is that if you need to, manually remove Windows 2000 again from your system, but do not just delete the WINNT directory. You'd want to boot up into WinMe, create a WinMe emergency boot disk, boot your system up with the diskette, then run sys c:

After that delete the following files from the root folder of drive C.
Pagefile.sys
Boot.ini
Ntldr
Ntdetect.com
Ntbootdd.sys

Now boot up with the Windows 2000 Professional CD, run through the setup, delete the exisiting NTFS partition (assuming you created and installed Windows 2000 Professional to an NTFS partition previously), then create the NTFS partition and install Windows 2000.

Hopefully at this point, if all goes well, you have a correct dualboot WinMe/Windows 2000 Professional system.

Good luck and I hope this helps some.
