| Almost through another work week! Hang it there, Friday is just around the corner! http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/guin.gif
A possible 2 part question for your today.
1) The RDISK tool that exisited in NT allowed you to create an Emergency Recovery Disk (ERD). Does that utility exist in Windows 2000?
A - True
B - False
2) If question (1) is False, How do you create an ERD under Windows 2000?
Bonus point if you can tell me if an ERD is bootable or not.
Good luck and see you tomorrow for the answer!!

| RDISK is not available in Win2k.
To make an ERD in Win2k:
Right click on a partition or drive, select PROPERTIES, TOOLS, BACKUP NOW, ERD.
This disk is not bootable, though you do get the option to also copy the registry. You need the Win2k CD using the fix option to use the ERD.
Could you make the disk bootable by copying the boot.ini , ntloader, IO.sys and NTDETECT.com files to it?

B)False..Windows does not include the Rdisk.exe program that was used in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and earlier versions to create an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).
Part 2
To create an ERD in Windows:
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Backup.
On the Tools menu, click Create an Emergency Repair Disk.
Insert a blank, formatted disk in drive A, and then click OK.

Not really. It would still not be a true bootdisk like a DOS bootdisk, because even though you could put the diskette in and "boot" to it, you need some type of accessibility to the hard drive to load NT/2000/XP.
I mean you could make it "bootable" in a sense by doing what you described but if your hard disk is crashed that diskette will not boot you to any type of OS on its own. The Boot.ini arc path is telling NT/2000/XP where to find the %SystemRoot% directory to complete the boot process by loading files in that reside in that directory and you aren't going to fit all those on a floppy diskette.
You really need some type of third party utility like Winiternals ERD Commander

or Ntfsdospro

And the answers are "B" - False for Question (1)
For Question 2 - http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;216337
Both ways described by DaPunisher and jonhiker will get you where you need to be to create the ERD. Thanks guys!
Well done everyone!! |
