Almost through the workweek and back to the QoD's

You backup your Windows 2000 Professional workstation named Merlin each morning using the following backup strategy:

Monday: Incremental
Tuesday: Differential
Wednesday: Differential
Thursday: Incremental
Friday: Normal

On Wednesday afternoon, Merlin crashes and you must recover. Which backup sets must you restore, and in which order?

(I know this is not a standard type backup scheme you'd run normally, just bear with me on this. )

Good luck and see you tomorrow for the answer!! (And look at this! - no A,B,C or D answer to choose from)

Usually you just need the last differential and the normal backup, but running an incremental on Monday would clear the archive bits. That means you also need Monday's tape.

This is a good example of why you would never use both differential and incremental backups together. Too darn confusing and only suited for QOD scenarios.

And the answer is....Friday - Monday - Wednesday.

Friday's a Normal so we start with that one first. An Incremental backs up only what has changed since the last incremental or normal backup. So we need each incremental tape since the last normal. In this case that's Monday's tape. Now, the backups are scheduled to run in the morning, and Merlin crashes in the afternoon, so the Wednesday Differential did complete. Differentials backup all files that have changed since the last normal or incremental, so Wednesday's backup icludes all the files that have changed since Monday.

A little tricky, and definitely not a backup scheme you would implement in the workplace. But it does help in getting an understanding of the different backup methodoligies. Nice job everyone!!
