hi guys just a quick question or two.
can any of you forseen any problems upgrading windows 98 machines and winnt wks to win2kpro?

I ask this as the windows 98 machines default to installing into a windows folder and the workstations default to putting the user info into profiles folder.

one more thing i'm going to be migrating the servers as well and have read conflicting stuff. icrosoft say to upgrade the PDC first or member servers but in the migration guide ive read it says to upgrade a BDC first just in case things go wrong!!!

thanks stevet

first of all it's a good idea to test any upgarde in a lab environment. the order, if i'm not wrong is :-

- upgrade the PDC
- upgrade the BDCs
- upgrade the Member Servers

now, you may wanna promote a BDC to a PDC(after you remove it from the network) and then upgrade the PDC to windows 2k Server and if successful ,bring it back to the production environment. then upgrade the rest in that order.

you also need to back up each of them before upgrading(in the course of an eventful upgrade).

Stevet, how is Arsenal doing in the premier league? used to like them battle Man.United

You should have no issues upgrading your Windows 98 clients to Windows 2000 Professional as long as the devices are on the HCL or there are Windows 2000 device drivers provided by the manufacturer. Legacy application migration is another story.... I would only upgrade one or two client systems first and perform UAT (User Acceptance Testing) on those systems for a period of two weeks. Have the business unit(s) sign off on their acceptance and proceed with the mass upgrade of the clients.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Hi All,

According to Microsoft (Microsoft Academic Learning Series, Windows 2000 Server, Upgrading the Primary Domain Controller, pg.87.)... "The first controlloer to be upgraded in a Windowss NT domain MUST be the PDC."

It is also a good idea to make sure a recent replication has taken place to assure the BDC is "up to date" ... Some people go as far as to take the BDC off line during the PDC upgrade. In case the upgrade goes bad, you can take the failed PDC upgrade off line, bring the BDC back up and promote it to PDC..and start over.

** Backups are a given **
