I have a windows 2000 professional computer at work. I want to share files with a win98 computer over the network. The problem is when I share a file with win 2000 adn i go to the win98 machine to access the shared file over the network. It asks me for a login and password and i didnt set any password on the shared file on the win 2000 machine??
What Can I do??

Thats normal operation. In a peer to peer environment, you have to supply credentials in order to access the resource. You'll have to input a valid username/password on the 2000 machine from the 98 one. You can create a domain environment, and then you wouldn't have to do that.

You must create an user account on ms 2k pro computer and set any neccessary permission for the shared folder for this user account.

Use this user account or any user account you have on ms 2k pro computer to access the shared folder. Normally, we input in username box as computer_name\user_name and input password in password box.

Good luck.

you still have to do this in a domain enviroment if you haven't logged into the domain on the win98 PC

I've just set up my home lab last week. The configurations are as followed:

One machine running WIN2K Server (Eval version) acting as a Domain Controller with Active Directory installed. DHCP is enabled with appropriate scope so that clients can obtain an IP address automatically.

For the "Clients" I have one PC running Win2K Pro and one PC running Win98 SE (on a 486 with 1GB HDD, this would help me to if WINS is working anyway).

Accounts for all "workstations" have been created in "AD Users and Computers"

When I tried to browse shared folders from the Win2K Pro WS and the Domain Controller using the Win98 PC I cannot see any shared folders at all unless I map the drive for each of them (if I do everything will be fine).

Now I want to share my dial-up connection in the PC running Win2K Pro but the problem is that when I enabled the ICS there was a Msg stating that the IP address will be configured as 192.168.0.1 (or something like that). In normal circumstance it's OK, however this IP address will not be in the scope that I have in the DHCP, meaning that I would not have my home lab work properly.

I think I missed something out. What should I do in this case, your contributions will greatly appreciated.

My apology to netteaser for using your thread for something else but I think this would be helpful for you as well.

Does it give you a //server/IPC$ text box?
If so, go to your W2K PC, right-click My Computer...Manage...that should bring you to the Computer Management Console...Expand Users...and double click Users. One the right should list all of the user accounts. Right click Guest > Properties > and enable the Guest User Account. This should get you in without asking for any passwords

You could try net use from the command prompt
you can then supply username /password without rexaling security.

NET USE [devicename | *] [\\computername\sharename[\vol
ume] [password | *]]
[/USER:[domainname\]username]
[/USER:[dotted domain name\]username]
[/USER:[username@dotted domain name]
[[/DELETE] | [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]]

NET USE {devicename | *} [password | *] /HOME

NET USE [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]

CT,

Isn't possible to install Directory Service Client on a 95/98/ME to allow browsing of a MS Domain using AD ..??

Just a thought ...

This is a normal behavior on the ICS service. The ICS service need a NIC connection to provide Internet access to your clients.

Remember: when you use a ICS computer on your network, you need to disable DNS and DHCP on your network, as ICS act as a DHCP and DNS proxy with NAT.

If you want to continue the use of DHCP, you need to kill ICS and use NAT and RRAS instead to provide internet access.

Regarding the permission problems... mmmm i have some details missed.

do you have SP3? do you check SRV on your DNS server? Do you configure your DHCP to update A records on the DNS server on behalf of your clients who don`t support Dynamic update (the case of the 98 machine) etc....

you can check all this issues to get ride of the problem....
