| I searched the Microsoft KB and didn't get any useful info, so here goes...
1.) Compressed files:
a. Moving or copying Compressed files - when do they lose the compression attribute?
b. Do uncompressed files copied or moved to a compressed folder get compressed?
2.) EFS files:
a. Moving or copying EFS files - when do they lose the EFS attribute?
b. Do un-encrypted files copied or moved to a EPS folder get encrypted?

| M.R.S.
Moving Retains Same Attribs (on partition only) all else inherents. Forgot who told me that here.

| Ruscorp is almost right here. MRS applies to all permissions and attributes EXCEPT EFS. The owner or RA must manually decrypt the file. | |

Correct, forgot to mention that.

| Compression and encryption are NTFS attributes and are mutually exclusive.
1.) Compressed files:
a. Moving or copying Compressed files - when do they lose the compression attribute?
As Ruscorp stated - Moving within the same NTFS partition - Retains. All other cases of moving or copying - Inherit.
Moving/Copying to a floppy looses it compression.
b. Do uncompressed files copied or moved to a compressed folder get compressed?
Depends. Reference answer to Question 1a. If you move an uncompressed file to a compressed folder located on the same NTFS partition, the file remains uncompressed. Move or copy that same file to a compressed folder located on another NTFS partition, the file will become compressed.
2.) EFS files:
a. Moving or copying EFS files - when do they lose the EFS attribute?
b. Do un-encrypted files copied or moved to a EPS folder get encrypted?
EFS only works on NTFS5 formatted volumes/partitions.
If you encrypt a folder, all files saved in that folder get encrypted. All files and subfolders/subdirectories (however you wnat to call them) that you create in an encrypted folder are also encrypted.
Encrypted files remain encrypted even if you move, copy or rename them.
Encrypted files moved to a FAT or FAT32 drive will loose their encryption. Files moved/copied to a floppy diskette loose their encryption as well.
Not wanting to get into the whole DRA discussion, but basically, if you didn't encrypt the file, you will get an access denied message if you try to move it to a FAT, FAT32 drive or a different NTFS volume. If a person other than the one who encrypted the file moves it to another folder on the same NTFS partition, the file will be moved. |
