I am using Microsoft Windows 2000 Self Paced training kit for the 70-210 exam.

I am having problems understand Chapter 2 Lesson 3 regarding Installing Windows 2000 over the Network.

I understand that you need a distribution server where the installation files reside.

The book mentions:

“The target computer requires a formatted partition on which to copy the installation files...”

Does this mean installing over the network simply involves copying I386 folder with its contents from the distribution server to the target computer and then installing Windows 2000 from the local hard drive by running winnt.exe or winnt32.exe?

OR

Can you run winnt.exe or winnt32.exe once you are in the I386 folder on the distribution server?

How can a computer with no operating system connect to a distribution server? I would be grateful if someone could explain how this would be achieved in a Windows environment with examples?

I have access to the following:

Windows 2000 CD
A workstation with Windows 2000 installed (with NIC)
A laptop with no O/S (with NIC)
A hub plus network cables

Will I be able to install Windows 2000 over the Network with the above items?

a dhcp server must be installed on the network to enable the client computer to access the RIS server.

RIS and distribution servers are two different animals. You create a distribution server by copying the I386 folder to a shared folder, you then access this share over the network and use either winnt or winnt32 depending on where you're at. The tricky part is making a network boot DOS disk if you are starting off with a clean install. You use this disk to connect to the share and initialize setup by running winnt.

Hope that helps.

acutally you need DNS, Active Directory, and DHCP to make RIS work..

Yikes, take it easy. Don't get offended when somebody else adds something that you didn't feel like typing in. Trust me, people learn from posts like these, and no offense was meant. It was just a simple clarification.

I just took 210 and even if you memorize every word in the MS Pro book you will not have the info. to pass the exam..it just isn't comprehensive enough. You will need other sources, like Server 2000 and The Resourse Kit for Pro. Trancenders helped me alot too. Like w/ stocks ... DIVERSIFY ..

If he is doing an installation over the network, all he needs is a network bootdisk that will map to the distribution share on the distribution server. In fact it doesnt even have to be a "server" it can be a computer that has the 'server version' running. as long as he has a partition large enough formated NTFS that is not the system partition.

He made no mention of RIS, so DHCP, Active Directory, and DNS are not needed.

I have this problem also. How do you make a network boot disk?

I did a little digging around on this. As it turns out NT 4 included am admin utility to create a network boot disk to do remote installations but W2K does not. I found this article (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=142857) on Microsoft's site on how to go about creating one in 2000. You'll still need access to NT software to do this however. I'm sure there MUST be a way to do this more simply. I even tried bootdisk.com but couldn't find anything there.

Hmm. My post must have been invisible.

If you don't have access to an NT 4 CD, then you can get the required files off of my FTP server. If anybody is interested PM me for further info.

lol. Sorry, Slinky. Your link was at the bottom of your post camouflaged by the "report this post to moderator" text. I guess I just passed it right over as I was reading through the replies.
