I will be taking my first MCSE exam sometimes in January. I was wondering about the right time to setup a lab. Since I have all the necessary software and hardware, my plan was to pass both w2k pro and server exams and then setup the lab. Is there any advantage to just dumping the w2k server, installing DNS and DHCP services, and running the dcpromo on a single machine and playing around with it for the first two exams? Or, wait until the M$ exams (70-216, 70-218, etc) and do elaborate installation and configuration of each service as the study guides walk you through?

The only thing that I am worried about in pro and server exams is GPO and RIS related questions? I mean to answer how to apply and filter GPOs, setting right permissions for RIS images, etc., an active AD network will really help. Thanks

Have your lab going while you study. It will make it a lot easier. The Server exam requires some basic knowledge of all the services.
