My PC caught a virus just like b4... well, it's the Blaster... The virus itself isn't on my machine but my system was remote controlled through the Internet connection and I saw all the previuos symptoms. I tried to repair the Win2k by reinstall, but almost all services are damaged, inculding RPC and others but my sys is still working.

My problem:

I tried multiple times to format the C: drive. It formats and leaves no data on the partition. BUT when I restart the PC and boot from HDD, I just go to W2k and enter my desktop like nothing happened. ANd when I tried to explore the partitions 'win interface', I find out that the formatted part. is E: (a logiacl part.). How come it format the E: part. when I select C: in DOS mode????

KNowing that C: is NTFS and E: is FAT32.

To install W2K, I have to install Win98 first then overwrite it by 2k.... When I try to install 98, It gives me the error msg that it can't be installed on an NTFS part. OK.

What can I do while I can't format C: using FAT32??

I hope I could express the problem clearly... If something wasn't clear in my post, pease ask me and I'll explain more.

Thanks for your help in advance.

have you tried using FDISK to remove the partitions then recreate the C: then format it. Reboot and run the install of win2k. once done you can then recreate your e: from disk management.

of course back up what you want to keep.

I agree with using fdisk to format your partitions. However, if you are going to use a dual system on your machine, it is better to make the c:\ drive a FAT32 and put 98 on that drive, and ntfs on your E:\ drive. Personally, I wouldn't even bother with 98. Also, have you tried booting into your recovery console for w2k? Or if you didn't download the recovery console, did you try booting to the boot disks to get to your recovery console on your w2k cd? Have you tried flashing your BIOS to a more recent version so as to let you install w2k without having to upgrade to 98 first?

Just to reiterate :

Use fdisk to remove all logical and then primary partitions (use a win98 boot disk to boot the machine and give you access to fdisk)and then create a primary partition from some of your disk space and mark it as active.

Then format this partition with FAT32 using the format command from the WIN98 boot disk.

Once this is up and running you can create another partition - format it with NTFS if that is what you want for your W2k partition - and load W2k.

Hope this helps

How do you know all of your services are damaged? What did you do to test this?

Did you mean that you chose the repair option when using your W2K CD instead of a clean install?

You obviously aren't formatting your HD if u reboot and it can still boot to W2K.

Use FDISK and reinstall W2K.

Thank yuo guys for all the responses to my post

I could actually solve the problem myself but in a weird way LoL... Anyway your posts are valued.

Fugaz13 & Nistis & YOUNGMAN... Your idea was good.. But it didn't suite my situation because I was backing up data on the other partions so I cuoldn't delete all the partitions or even the primary 'cause you sure know that I'll have to delete them all, and other mass storage media are not available for me.

I don't want W98 on my machine and W2k on E... I was just using the 98 to upgrade it to Win2k.

Look what I did:

I have borrowed WinXP from a friend, ran it from Win2K then selected the option, "Upgrade to the new version of Windows". When I was in the process of installation and preparing the partition for the install, I chose to format the c: with FAT32. It was formatted. After that, I interrupted the installation and rebooted the machine then the C: was ready for Win98 to be installed on it.

Thanks all again

I could tell from the symptoms of the Blaster virus.
I faced this problem before so I knew what happened, the difference here is that my C: part. was NTFS. Before, it was FAT32, so I didn't have any problem to reinstall W98 on it before.

Some examples about the virus symptoms that I saw:

-Failure of the RPC service. (it shows when you open Administrative Tools programs, they don't work 'e.g. Disk Management' and the error is displayed"
-You can't copy, cut and paste text or icons.
-you can't drag and drop icons
-Internet connection can never be disconnected even when you unplug the tel. line.. It does when you reboot.
-You can't display properities of some patitions from MY COMPUTER.
-You suddenly find many shares on your computer, while u didn't share them.
