Question of Day Mon Jan 20?????

| Monday's question of the day asks with OSes can be directly upgraded to Win2k. It listed Win95, 98, ME, NT 3.51, NT 4.0 and Win 3.1 as options. It gave the correct answer as 95, 98, NT3.51 and NT4.0. I agree with those; however, I am currently studying Mike Meyers passport series and he says that ME can also be directly upgraded. I have gone to the MOC materials that I got in class, and Microsoft doesn't even mention ME, not even to say it is NOT upgradable. Also went to Technet, same deal.
My question is: ME is technically part of the Win9x series, is it not? And if that is the case, wouldn't it be upgradable just like the other Wn9x OSes?
And if Microsoft doesn't say yay or nay, then what answer are THEY going to want on a test question???

| ME came out after 2000, so it can't be upgraded.
You could probably set it up as a dual boot if you installed 2000 on another partition, but who would want to keep ME?

Thank you tharg, especially for the link. It seems that Mr. Meyers didn't edit his book well, doesn't it? Microsoft is certainly clear enough about this issue, and again, I appreciate the info. I NEVER would have found that link!

| No problem at all bluewren!
It IS nearly impossible to find things on the MS site isn't it? Also there's not much point bookmarking stuff since they regularly shuffle it all around! Tsk, tsk - should do better Microsoft!
Here's a couple of Google tricks:

[2] Above is fine but if you want results from the MS site *only* then type the following, say, into Google:
minimum requirements 2000 site:microsoft.com
Oh! A buddy of mine has a Meyers A+ book - it's only OK. Did you check the "errata" for the book?

They don't seem to like supporting anything except XP and 2000. It's like pulling teeth trying to find info about any other OS.
I tried to research something on Windows 98 the other day and good old MS linked me to a graph showing how they're phasing out support for Windows 95/98. Wow, that was helpful. I've linked the page if you're interested.

| Microsoft IS pretty bad about moving things around. I gave up on bookmarks on their site ages ago!
As for Mike Meyer's A+ book, I studied that book almost exclusively for the A+ tests, and passed both tests in about fifteen minutes total. Perhaps your friend has an older edition? However, on the Meyer's Net+ book, it basically did nothing for me on that exam. Fortunately, I was using many other sources that time, and managed to pass that exam too, with a much higher score than I thought possible! (really, I'm not bragging, I'm just STILL surprised...)
Say, how do you reply to a message on here without a quote? I'm sure you don't want to read your own words five million times and I can't seem to find another way to reply. Although I have been reading these forums for over a year, I'm still pretty new at posting and replying.
Thanks again for your help, and thanks also to everyone else who replied. You guys are all GREAT!

| The comments on the Mike Myers books (wasn't he the bad guy in the "Halloween" movie!) - well I can't really vouch for them never having read any of them. If you know anyone doing Net+, Dave Groth's book by SYBEX is excellent. There are errors (nobody's perfect) but they're posted on the SYBEX site.
SYBEX actually do a good line in cheap ($20 or so) books - orange in colour, combining several books in one. I also used a SYBEX book for my 70-215: OK but needed supplementing with lots of KB articles. A book I have to recommend here is Mark Minasi's Mastering W2K Server - which I got recently: outstanding! It's not written *to* the exams but Minasi has a brilliant writing style that keeps you interested and it's very detailed. For 210 I'm using an MS Press book - hopefully it'll do the trick.
To reply to a message on here without a quote? I think you've answered your own question!

| Well, I sort of answered my own question about replying without a quote, but that's only because I deleted the quote before posting my reply! (where there's a will, there's a way)
I have heard good things about Mark Minasi also, and will seriously consider giving him a try. Unfortunately, I start a new job tomorrow, NOT in the IT field, which will severely limit my study time! But, at least it's better than being unemployed, which is where I have been for the last four months.
Anyway, best of luck to you with YOUR exams, and please let us know how you do. I'm always happy to hear a success story here; it keeps me motivated when I start feeling all this stuff is way too much to remember!
|
| Hang in there bluewren, as you said "where there's a will there's a way". Good luck in the new job! | |

| It CAN be upgraded .. I posted a "new" thread to reply "Windows ME Upgrade".. Sorry .. Look for Microsoft Article Q318716
Thx | |
|
| Alaska1 - Remember that just because you can upgrade from ME to Windows 2000 in real life does not mean that it is a correct answer on an exam question. Again, I can run Windows 2000 problem on a system with 32MB of RAM without a problem, but that is not the minimum memory requirement for Windows 2000 Professional.
Officially, Microsoft does not support upgrading from ME to Windows 2000.
Here's the link:
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;EN-US;272627
(Also, Alaska1 at the bottom of article 318716 it states:
"MORE INFORMATION
An upgrade from Windows Me to Windows 2000 is not supported.
