_Is WINS in 70-210?_

I have the latest Microsoft Book (c) 2003 70-210 Self Paced Training Kit and the only mention I can find of WINS in the book is that it is not needed in a homogeneous W2K environment.

BUT

I have seem some "example" questions that rely on a knowledge of WINS and even one were WINS is the proposed answer.

Does anyone know if WINS is still in 70-210?

TIA

If I make this a Poll Vote

1 for Yes
2 for No

OK

Hi tetragamon,

Depends on the situation, you need to have WINS in your network, if your network is a pure Win2K environment then you don't need WINS. However, if there are a mixture of OS then you should have WINS.

If you have Win2K installed, here is a quick reference: Launch Help -> Select the Index tab -> Type WINS -> Defined. I know that you have M$ book but hope this would help.

By the way, I learned a lot from the Win2K help file during my exam preparation, Thanks to M$.

for the 70-210 exam you might have a few questions about a wins proxy, or about host files--certainly not as in depth as infrastructure or server..

Extracted from Microsoft KB,

SUMMARY
Windows NT Server and Workstation, Windows 95 and the protected mode TCP/IP- 32 for Windows for Workgroup 3.11 allow a Windows Internet Name Service (WINS)-enabled computer to act as a WINS proxy agent for the b-node clients. The purpose of the WINS proxy agent is to resolve name queries from the b-node clients through the WINS server.

MORE INFORMATION
When a b-node client tries to access a resource, it sends a broadcast for that name on the local subnet. If a WINS proxy agent is enabled on that subnet, the agent picks up the name query and tries to resolve it through the internal cache of remote names. If the name is not registered in the cache, the agent contacts the WINS server to resolve the names. If the name query for the remote name is successful, the proxy agent receives the IP address of the remote name from the WINS server. When the IP address is received, the proxy agent caches the name, waits for the next query for that name, and then responds from the cache indicating that the name query is successfully resolved. If the proxy agent cannot resolve a name through the internal cache or by the WINS server, the proxy agent will not return any response to the b-node client causing the b-node client to time-out. A proxy agent does not participate in the name registration process, nor does it check for duplicate names in the WINS server database for the b-node client.
NOTE: There should only be one or two proxy agents enabled per subnet. Enabling more than two proxy agents causes multiple requests to be sent to the WINS server, and multiple responses to be generated for each name query on the local subnet.
NOTE: In Windows NT 4.0, the WINS Proxy Agent cannot be enabled in the Network Control Panel, but can be enabled by changing a registry setting.

SUMMARY
This article discusses the recommended practices for implementing the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS). Following these practices should decrease the occurrence of WINS problems.

MORE INFORMATION

* It is highly recommended that a WINS server point to itself as primary and secondary WINS in the TCP/IP configuration. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

150737 Setting Primary and Secondary WINS Server Options

* It is highly recommended to use the correct ratio of WINS servers to WINS clients. A general rule is to have one WINS server for each 10,000 users plus one additional WINS server for redundancy. The redundant server does not have to be located at the same site.
For additional information on WINS Ratios, please see the following White Paper available on the Microsoft anonymous ftp server:

Thanks for the info

I will be going on to do the server exam myself so it makes sense to know this stuff but I would like to concentrate on the 70-210 for the moment so it is good to be assured by the majority vote that it is not on the 70-210.
