| well how bout I don't know,and don't want to guess,and I don't want to come off as a smart arse,but perhaps the anwser is "E": none of the above according to this page on microsoft's site which says "use the Backup utility to create an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD)",

"To back up the whole registry, use the Backup utility to create an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD), or back up the System State (which includes the registry, the COM+ Class Registration database, and your boot files)."
Translation: You can use the Backup to create an ERD *and/or* backup the registry, system state etc.

Backing up the System State data via Windows Backup will allow him to back up the registry, boot files, and the Component Services Class registration database.
