I have been browsing other forums here for a while, and I just wanted to take a minute and let you know I am going to sit for the 70-210 exam next Tuesday. Wish me luck!

I wish you lots of luck. I am planning to have my 70-210 next Feb and I have already read a lot of books. As far as I started from scratches, which is I am proud of, I recommend Networking Complete by Sybex and then MCSE Training Kit by Microsoft and after being done studying you can prime all that with Microsoft Readiness Review.

My advice to you my friend is to not only memmorise as many questions on this exam as possible but more importantly pass it.
There's a fair bit of binary out there and I hated the put an arrow to a picture questions.
Steel yourself for the worst. If you have a brain like a magnet or have had muliple pc's to practice, you will without question pass.

I am more than wishing you well. I am not a pc person and have failed this 210 exam twice. Pass it buddy. You'll be fine.

I read about 4 books on it, exam essentials, ms press, etc. I also have a home lab with 4 servers, 5 workstations, 3 laptops, 2 network printers, on a routed segments.

So you are taking it Tuesday too? Mine is at 8:00am... to early...lol
kuek

2002-12-25, 6:40 pm

You're ready! Your home network seems to be able to simulate most network situations. I'm using VMWare for simulations & handson as I just don't have the space.

All the best on the 210 & LOL (I probably need more of it).

Keep us updated.

Thanks everyone! Cheers!

All the best, drhixson - you'll make it, Good Luck!

everetjo, I used the MCSE Core Training Kit from M$Press. With the benefit of hindsight, master the materials and handson before practice test packs (if you are not under any time pressure). The 210 materials by itself is insufficient. The article by Jill Gebelt in Certcities on the 210 exam review helped, I kind of used it as a checklist.

I think it helps (for me anyway) to put in a thread here to let everyone know when you booked the exam. The fact that folks here know when you are sitting for the exam puts that much more sense of urgency to put in the hours to hit the books, tests and labs to deliver.

Best of luck with your exam, drhixson.

I plan to sit for it later this month as well.

By the way, I wish you all a very happy new year and pass as many exams as you wish.

I'm doing the chicken run for the time being from MCSE stuff.
Gonna get me a book or two on A+ certification having gone into MSCE with £££ in my eyes and a hope in hell once I'd stepped into the water. Besides much of what I have learned is covered in both A+ and networking exams.

I've already been given a lead from this forum.

Everetjo,
Your link just gives a whole lot of xx's to the website. Mike Meyer's passport book was an entertaining read and it too was not the only thing I used in my preparation for my last 710-210 exam which I still failed in my second attempt.

The fact that you already have an A+ certification to your belt already helps. My only advice for passing the 210 exam is some hand to hand practice, the resources or time I myself am not prepared to give.

Vinnie.

If your preparing for the mcse or mcsa tracks, read the mspress books about the exams to get the technical knoledge, and read the osborne syngres mcgrahill books, you can find them in amazon at these web site, these series of books give you the skills to pass the mcse and mcsa exams, and practice on transcender test, i think is a big investement but it will give you the skills necesary to learn for the actual hands on the job, and to learn.

you can start by buying these book
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=glance&s=books

these one help me pass my 70-210 exam.

i use these series for microsoft certs, if your planing on comptia use sybex and the xxxxxxxx bible ether a+, server+, network+, inet+, linux+ bible.

i work on a 2k network right now, and plan on going through the MOC labs.

what about the rediness review? how accurate is it?
jayb1

2003-01-01, 6:21 pm

The MOC materials are good but, don't cover all the variables that will probably be covered on the test. I would reccomend using the Transcender practice exams as well as any hands on experience or simulation you can muster. I went out and purchased a used Proliant 1600 just so I could install Advanced Server and practice.
drhixson

2003-01-01, 6:24 pm

I agree with Jayb, I have the following lab:

3 Compaq DL320 Servers
1 IBM e-Server
4 Compaq Deskpro desktops
1 WAP
1 Ethernet Switch
1 Baystack MAU
1 Cisco 4000 router
2 APC 400 UPS's

Having a lab makes it 100% better.
kuek

2003-01-01, 6:33 pm

I second that. When PRESSED for time, forget the study materials and hit the test prep. I actually used an old transcender Procert. Read the explanations and understand - only hit the ref mat when stuck. Good luck!

My notes from the 70-210 MSPress mat runs into about 40 pages. I calculated the 70-215 mat is about the same. Should be hitting 215 soon, after I've recovered from the 'strain' of doing 210. I estimate 2 weeks of study and 1 week of test prep (meaning an investment in Trans' Servercert).

I recommend using VMWare to simulate a working network. They have a full working 30 day evaluation version.

I passed! I think I was worring myself for nothing, the exam really was not that hard...

everetjo

2003-01-02, 9:38 am

congrats drhixson!!

im scheduled for the 18th. that should give me enough time to go through my labs and do some more transcenders..

any idea of what a confident score on the transcenders would be?
jayb1

2003-01-02, 10:17 am

Great Job drhixon!!

As for the Transcender question, I have heard that the Transcenders can actually be more difficult than the tests. The key is the be able to pass the all transcender exam variations (A,B,C,) especially the CAT exam which simulates the new "adaptive" exams MS is using. Also as mentioned before, read the explanations for each of the transcender questions you get wrong! They are worded very well, amd will help you understand where you need to brush up.

On a different note, I just read an article that projects a pretty good future job demand for IT professionals in all fields (close to 100% growth by 2010!) In fact, the only sector expected to grow faster is healthcare!

Congratulations drhixson!

Ok, let's push on to 215. They say it's easier than 210. The local prometric guy said most candidates go for the 215 first before the 210.

Sounds good Kuek. When are you planning on taking 215?

Perhaps we can scale the MS mountain together...lol

The 70-210 has 61 questions now and no more scores just pass/failed on computer screen with a printout. I failed it the first time I will take it again this month.

Sounds good Keuk. I was thinking about trying it next Friday. I have been studying it along woth Pro. Odd thing is you really have to know server and pro to take the 210 exam....

drhixon...

You probably made the right move scheduling 215 so soon after 210. The material will be fresh in your mind, and you can continue on your passing momentum!!

Best of luck once again!!

I have 210 next Friday. I'm worried about passing not so much because of the cost to retake, but rather because of how my wife might react if I fail!!
drhixson

2003-01-03, 2:25 pm

evertjo, I am not saying you will know all you need to know for 215, but on 210 you have to know NTFS permissions, RIS, Sysprep, etc. Router configs (limited), IP, RRAS, VPN, EAP, and a couple other things.

From everyone that I hear, they say 210 is the hardest of the exams... I hope that is true since I am kinda pushing myself on the MCSA\MCSE track. I am shooting for 1 exam per week. Although at that rate my brain will be jello...lol

My best advise is to be confortable with the systems. I cant stress enough having a small lab. I work on my lab and on-the-job experience 7 days a week nonstop.

My best advise, just "play with the systems", thats what I do.

Best of luck to you
drhixson

2003-01-03, 2:29 pm

Jayb------ You will do fine. I will have to say this though, but I am sure allot of you out there may disagree with me.... A good study book or package costs a hundred dollars or so. Sometimes the money can be better invested in taking the test. Not explictly to pass\fail the exam, but to get a general idea of the test, how the test flows, the general wording of the questions, etc. Sometimes that can be more helpful than the best books or Trancenders. But there is a flip side to every senerio..

Just my 2 cents...
jayb1

2003-01-03, 2:46 pm

everetjo...

You should be almoast as proficient with server as you are with pro. The thing to remember is that there isn't a 1 to 1 correlation between the Microsoft Oficial Cirreculum (MOC) ant each test. For example course #2152 is called "Implementing MS Windows 2000 Professional and Server." One course, but both OS's are covered. Also, I have heard that there are quite a few questions on RIS, which isn't covered very well at all in the aformentioned class. I took all four classes for MCSA and then decided when I would take the test. Each test could contain pieces from all 4 Microsoft courses. This is why using exam prep tools can be better because they mimic the actual exam.
everetjo

2003-01-03, 3:05 pm

thanks for the help..

ill start incorporating more server info into my studies.

going through the 70-210 transcender i felt comfortable, but im sure that more information couldnt' hurt. i also have the 2k resource kit for both pro and server. i still have about two weeks to go through labs that im weak on.

What is needed to know about routers on 210? Wasn't aware of this. I cannot find any info on the need to know about routers in reference to being tested on the 210? Please respond how much knowledge (don't want to put an enormous amount of study if little is needed) ...but don't want to be caught by surprise.

Sorry if I worried you...

Nah...no worry. I am comfortable with all IP, subnet, gateways etc... I have 2 or three study guides by freak that are really good and feel I have a grasp on IP, TCP/IP etc...
Thanks for responding back. I'm going to give 210 and 215 a try this month. Nearly there on confidence level. Just need to keep going with hands on labs right now. Again, thanks.

Before Microsoft brought in its pass/ fail thing I found myself with a better grade at the 210 than I did at the 215 level both of which I took on the same day without regrets.
