| Staying with the troubleshooting theme....
denis_baribeau, while surfing the 'net in search of cool stuff, locates the latest and greatest Windows 2000 driver for his NIC on his Windows 2000 Professional system.
denis, throwing caution to the wind, decides to install the driver on his system and after installation of the driver receives a message to restart his computer to complete the installation. denis clicks OK. His computer reboots and displays the standard Windows 2000 login screen. denis is feeling really happy right now because all seems to have gone well with the installation of the NIC driver.
denis logs onto the system, and after a few seconds, <poof> the computer stops responding. denis turns the system off and then on again. At the Windows Advanced Options screen he selects LKGC (Last Known Good Configuration), logs onto the system and the system stops responding again.
At this point denis feels that something is not quite right with these "latest and greatest" NIC drivers he installed and he wants to restore the original drivers for the NIC so his system becomes operational again. (Yes, he has much more surfing to do and the night is still young )
What would be the first step denis should take? (emphasis on first step).
A. Use the Recovery Console
B. Use the ERD (Emergency Repair Disk)
C. Start in Safe Mode
D. Use Fixmbr
E. Reinstall Windows 2000
See you tommorrow for the answer! | |

Thanks enforcer. I'm planning on releasing the film in December so it can go head to head with Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers
I also thought about including an answer "F" - Go grab a cold one with Slinky, then reboot into safe mode. I think I include that as an answer on the next QoD.
Thanks. | |

| I wonder where denis is at? I know he's lurking around here somewhere | |

| LOL ,Here I am
First I would go for FFFFFF
than
Since I already log on ,the LKGC is not going to help me any.
So Safe mode would be the proper order to disable to driver
C. Start in Safe Mode
PS: I reached the end of the internet this morning ,now I am writing a book.
Will get the link and post it here in a minute.

And the answer is..... C
Last Known Good Configuration is not going to help you in this case because you've already logged back into the system after the updated drivers were installed. The "trap" to watch out for is selecting "A" - the recovery console. Yes the recovery console could be used to disable the NIC driver allowing you to successfully boot up the system and un-install the driver, but it is not the preferred "first step" according to MS. That would be booting up into Safe Mode, which would not load the NIC driver and allow you to log on locally to the system to uninstall the updated drivers and re-install the original drivers for the NIC. Of course, if all else fails, you could re-install Windows 2000, but that would be a last ditch effort and definitely not the first step you should try. |
