I am installing 2000 pro on a computer which just got a new hdd. The hdd that was inside prior was confiscated and used for evidence. Anyway, I boot from the 2000 pro cd and it goes through the usually motions, blah, blah, blah, press F6 to insert penis, installing Microcrap SCSI drivers etc. Then as soon as it gets to the end point where it says "Setup is starting Windows 2000", it just sits there and stalls. There is no hdd activity or anything. It's said "Setup is starting Windows 2000", for the past 3 hours now. It's a PIII 600 so I don’t think it should take that long so obviously something is wrong somewhere. What have I missed?

My $0.02 worth more than yours...
Well, just because your 2 cents would be Canadian...

You're correct, it is likly to be the hardware inspection problem.

Check two things:
- check the CPU FAN is still working.
- after you reboot, it should pick up from where it left off.

Good luck. Ruscorp.

as always, excellent link, denis_baribeau

there is nothing to add.

Perhaps....check the BIOS and see, if there is any wrong settings. Could just go with the Default-settings + boot from CD.

Thx for the Link, Denis

Forgot to give you guys some other important info.

The drive inside prior was a WD 10GB. I basically quickly replaced it with an old on-site part I removed from any old Dell at the office another WD, model #WDAC21000-00H. It's a WD Caviar 21000, small hdd. It is only 1GB.

The computer itself is very basic. It operated perfectly fine before this hdd switch. (...and yes I have all the cables in right) The computer has a Netgear NIC, standard 16MB nVidia video card, no sound, no usb, serial or parallel devices are connected. All that is connected is your basic 3. Keyboard, mouse and monitor. What else could I remove? The NIC perhaps? I can't obviously remove the video card. Maybe I should try another hdd?

twister166: I know the cpu fan is defiantly running because I have the case open and am actually watching it turn so that can't be it. Thanks for helping though.

denis_baribeau: Thanks for the link.

i had the same problem, worked fine during setup, win startup went to the end of the blue line and locked up.
turned out to be video problem.changed vid card and booted up...if you have onboard video, use it.

65blue: Nah, no on-board video. It's an Intel SE440BX motherboard.

I have tested installing win2000 and win98 in the same HDD Only 1.28 GB dual-boot and only 1.33 CPU 64 MB ram and it works not that speed but at lest it responses to my clicks not bad.

MS says 2GB with at least 650 MB of free hard disk space.

yeah, do tell us more about 'taken away for evidence'

It would be the easiest thing to do is to try with a 2GB HDD and leave averything else alone.

Also during the hardware detection screen you could press the F5 key to enter the HAL selection and pick the standar pc choice or other and get the latest from M$.

If the install go well on a 2GB HDD ,I would even try to ghost it to the 1GB and see what happen .

Just a play pc after all.Have fun.

The other hdd was 'taken away for evidence' because we had a lawyer 'taking money under the table' (if you know what I mean) and started to delete crap when he was caught. As we all know, when you delete something, it isn't really deleted and that is being used against him in court. The funniest part is I'm an 'expert witness' on this case. I'm a moron with a little over a year experience and I already qualify as an expert, cool!

If anyone cares, I figured out what the problem was. It was a bad dimm. I removed it and then it was smooth sailing (even though the drive was 1GB).
