| I am trying to do some of the labs for this test. Looking for a dos network startup disk
so I can do a win2k install. Anybody know of boot disk that will load Tcp/ip and connect to a domain controller. I am trying to use netstarter 1.4 with no luck and I don't have time right now. Thanks

| Oh man, this is a tricky thing to do. I have a website that gives you a step by step how-to, but let me tell you its still a royal pain in the a$$ to do. I've done it once, but only because I have the same network card that they are talking about. Anyways here it is. Wish you the best of luck in this endeavor.

BTW you will need an NT 4.0 disk to copy some files you will need. Like 3 or so.

| I would highly suggest that you use winnt32 from within Windows instead of going through DOS. Much easier this way. There isn't much difference between the two, and they both yield basically the same results. You just have to have Windows installed to do it, and with this configuration you can dual boot. Just make sure you know the difference in switches between Winnt.exe (DOS) and Winnt32.exe (Windows). | |

| Why not run " RBFG.EXE" on your DC or any Windows 2000 Server. Must have Adminpak installed.
It will create a Network-bootable Floppy, that is looking for a
1.: compatible NIC
2.: RIS-Server with a Image prepared.
good luck with it. | |

Adminpak will allow you to run RBFG? I thought that was a file in the RIS folder.

| Look here:

hope, this helps.
I have done a lot of Remote-Installations in my Lab, keeping one NIC around just for this purpose. (it is compliant with the Drivers supplied with the RBFG-floppy)

| I understand that. I was just wondering why you mentioned adminpak with RBFG. | |

| ooops,
Well i think it won't work without the Adminpak installed.
But then.... come to think of it, i always install the Adminpak on a Server pretty much in the Beginning, so, honestly, i can't even tell you, if RBFG.EXE will work without it.
But i am pretty sure, you need to have it installed. Perhaps someone may correct us.

| I'm pretty sure you don't have to have it installed. I don't ever recall installing it to use RIS. Not saying you're wrong though. If I'm not mistaken, adminpak is used to administer certain aspects of a Windows 2000 Server from a Windows 2000 Professional computer. Don't quote me on that though. | |

| I must be missing something that you are saying, because this should answer both our questions.
If you authorize the RIS server on a non-domain controller computer, follow these steps to install the Administrator Tools Package: Click Start, click Run, and type adminpak.msi on a Server system. From a Professional based system, execute adminpak.msi from the Windows 2000 Server CD.
Although not covered in this guide, you can administer the majority of the RIS configuration settings from a Windows 2000 Professional client. To administer a RIS server from a Windows 2000 Professional client, install the Administrator Tools package AdminPak.msi that ships as part of the Windows 2000 Server CD. The Administrator Tools package can be deployed or installed from the <Windir>\System32 directory on the server.
I didn't feel like reading the whole thing, so I just did a search.

| Yes, Slinky
And you just confirmed my Point:
Adminpak is required.
| |

| LOL. Read this silently while I read it aloud. The key words here are "non-domain controller". Not a domain controller with RIS. However, if RIS was installed on a computer that was not a domain controller, then then adminpak is required. I know you probably think you are better off arguing with a rock, but I still fail to see it. | |

| I'll bet you a 6-pack that you don't need it.
I found this little jewel.
The RBFG.exe utility is also contained within the Administrator Tools package that ships with Windows 2000 Server.

| You 're on!

| Slinky 2002-08-14, 10:53 pm |
| Actually you are correct, I was talking about RIS and RBFG and you were just talking about RBFG in general. However RBFG will do you absolutely no good unless you have RIS installed. | |

| So lets just have that six-pack together, shall we?
My Choice is Warsteiner.
I will be fine with Fosters as well.
