| I set a W2K machine and since it was for my own personal use, I checked the always logon as box during setup. Now the machine is being used by my niece away at college, and I want the logon screen to come on and ask for a user and password. Is there any way to do this besides editing the registry? I already tried to delete the account that the machine normally logged on with, but that didn't work. I couldn't find anything on MS website that would pertain to this. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks. | |

| To bypass the AutoAdminLogon process, and to log on as a different user, hold down the SHIFT key after you log off or after Windows restarts.
Not sure if this resets it or if you have to go to the registry for the permanent fix. Try it and let us know. | |

| Thanks, I'll give it a try. If not I'll probably have to edit the registry. I should've thought about this before I set it up this way. This was supposed to be my lab machine. At least I'm learning something! | |

| Holding the shift key did bypass the autologon but I needed to do it every boot up. I ended up editing the default user in the winlogon key of hkey_local_machine. Works fine now. Thanks for your help Pavlov! | |

| Another way to accomplish this would be to go through the Control Panel - Users and Passwords - and checking the box that says: Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.

| Thanks rafman. I already fixed the problem, but at least I know how to solve it next time. | |

Thanks rafman |
