How do you recover a deleted keyboard driver?
|
|
|
| Someone asked me this question today, but I could not answer him, so I was hoping that someone here could shed some light on the problem.
A USB keyboard driver was deleted on a Windows 2000 Pro machine.
The keyboard could access the BIOS (CMOS), and also the F8 part where you can choose safe mode etc.
But during logon, there was no response from the keyboard.
Last known was attempted but failed, and so was safe mode.
Can the drivers be reinstalled from the recovery console?
Or is it possible to access the c drive of the PC (by mapping drive) and then reinstalling the drivers there?
Anyone help????? | |

| Hmmm this seems very odd to me
Surely if the drivers were deleted then at the next boot up Windows would detect the Keyboard and ask for / re-install the drivers itself ???????
Can't think why windows would not detect the keyboard suddenly ?
Try booting with a PS2 keyboard and then once in, re-install the USB keyboard.

| Thought about that too, but it's one of those small portable desktops that has 4 USB slots and no PS/2.
Thanks for the reply anyway.

| does the machine error if you boot without the keyboard attatched
that could possibly indicate wether the port recognises a usb device or keyboard is faulty
do u have a spare usb Keyboard to try?

| you won't be able to install the drivers remotely by mapping a drive, you would need some remote control software installed, (landesk, JP1, or pcAnywhere to name a few).
what make of pc is it? (very unusual not to have ps/2 port), does it per chance have an old fashioned 5 pin(AT) connector?

| Sounds kinda like the Compaq EZ- toaser oven looking PC. All USB, no PS/2. There are more of them available than you might think.
You could try another keyboard. But I would first make sure that the BIOS settings are correct. Make sure PnP OS is enabled, and make sure USB/usb keyboard is enabled, & that there's an IRQ assigned to it. Could also try to clear the CMOS with the jumper.
Hope that helps... | |

| Thank you all for your replies.
Th PC is a Gateway Flex ATX machine with no PS/2, only 4 USBs.
The BIOS recognises the keyboard fine, I can get into the cmos as usual with it.
I can also choose safemode by hitting F8 on the USB keyboard during bootup. So there are no problems there.
But when the profile ID and password login box comes up, all I can do it move the mouse. No response whatsoever from the keyboard.
Windows was reinstalled on it, so it's working now, but still want to know how it can be fixed,if the situation was to occur again.

| Guess there must be an easier solution than re-insatalling OS, but I'm buggered if I know what it is.
Best bet would be to fire off an E:Mail to the tech supp dept of Gateway after all they made the thing with no ps2 ports let them get brain drain from it.
You sure theres no USB keyboard driver on an ERD somewhere, maybe on a recovery disk supplyed by Gateway ?

install some remote control software on all pc's then you can always control from another pc (landesk,jp1, pcAnywhere)
