| I took the 70-210 for the second time yesterday and failed again. I only just missed out the first time with a score of 520. Since then, i have studied for about 5 hours everyday using the New Riders book and took the test again 10 days later, and guess what, another score of 520! I don't know where i am going wrong, i didn't think the test was that difficult, the questions were very long winded though. I seem to do well on all the practice exams that i have taken, but bomb out on the real thing.
I have been working in IT support for 5 years now, but the company i work for still uses Win95 and OS/2. I have tried getting them to pay for a W2K course for me, but they won't until they migrate to W2K sometime next year. I do have Win2000 server and Win2000 professional on my PC's at home to help with my study, but this doesn't seem to have helped. Has anyone got any advice that would help me, i am so close to just giving up.

| Don't give up Calvin! What are you using for practice tests? Have you looked at Transcenders? Search this forum for the question of the day and see how you do on those questions. Microsoft exams are known for being wordy and a lot of it is simply weeding through the questions to find out what they are really asking. Transcenders really helps with that and the explanations are great. | |

Yeah, DON'T!
I have been working with Win2K for 2 years, am the LAN Administrator for my company, studied for 2 and a half months, and wrote 210 yesterday, guess what 520!!!!!!!
It sucks, I know how you feel. But if you give up, where will you be . . . it will have won. Once you pass, you'll appreciate it more.
In my case, there were a lot questions that I didn't really understand what was being asked. I was looking at my study guides last night and I realized that there was A LOT of small stuff that I missed! I'll go back, review and nail it next time.
Just play with the OS, study and ask questions. The tack I'm going to take is to not only learn what the right answers are to the questions, but really understand why those answers are right.
Keep a positive attitude, I've never met a Brit yet that's a quitter!!!

| Yeah, i know i shouldn't give up, but if i can't even get 54% on the first exam after 2 attempts, what chance have i got on getting through the whole MCSE, because that's what i was aiming for.
I'm going to hit the books again and give it another go in about 3 weeks time. Hopefully it will be third time lucky.
|
| perhaps get another book to get a fresh perspective on the same subject.
I would also take topics from the book and use microsoft.com/technet to read those in depth rather than going over the same book over and over again.
|
| Ya, don't give up.
If you came up with 520 both times, there must be an objective, or objectives that you'er getting wrong, or missing. Go to M$ site a pull down the objectives for this 210 test and comb through it. You also can get the transenders testing software. The transenders software is $$, but worth it. The less $$ is cert21 test at cert21.com
What book(s) are you using?
From what I hear on these boards, is that you need at least two diffrent books on the subject you'er using to study.
Pick up a copy of M$ training kit win 2000 pro book, If your going after MCSE get the training kit.
If not that try www.mcsefreakpress.com

| Keep yer chin up mate!
Re-group and take mikop's advice of using another resource or two to prepare in your studies. Focus in on the areas that may be tripping you up, and then have another go at it.
Best of luck to you! | |

| Help is at hand ... have you looked at the study guides from Freak's site? Also if you have any questions then don't be afraid to ask we will be glad to point you in the right direction. Also have a look at the online demonstrations and their resource kit on the MS site.
Apart from that don't give up - I wouldn't have got what I have if I had after failing the A+ Core exam!!

| Subscribe to questions of the day from this site and other sites on the net. You need to get use to answering questions. Once subscribed you will receive the questions daily via e-mail. Also make google your friend. There are tons of free practice exams on the net. You just have to look!
One more thing, there is a lot of 215 material contained on the 210 exam. You should prepare for 210 and 215 together.

| "Never give up! Never surrender!"
My HS teacher always say, "keep your goal small and take one step at a time."
Don't worry about the whole MCSE. Just focus your study on all the material on the one test that you are going to take. Passing that test will give you more confidence on the next test or goal. Keep hacking at it and you'll eventually get there.
I.E. The thought of reading an entire 1000+ pages book can be discouraging, but if you just focus on finishing one, two, or three chapters a day and keep a consistent goal. You will be amazed on how fast you will have finished that book.
Best of Luck!!! | |

Like everyone here is saying you mustn't give up on this quest of yours. So what if you've failed the 210 twice. It's only a test and it's just a bump on the road. You CAN pass it! You just need to refocus your study efforts and take another approach to preparing for the exam.
IMHO you shouldn't rely on just one book. I've used the New Riders too for this exam and I think it's adequate. However, I've also used the ExamCram book for 210 as a supplemental study guide which I think is very good. If you can afford it get the W2K Pro Resource Kit also. There's alot of good info in there not in Examcram or New Riders books.
Last, if you're not using Transcender you're really kicking yourself in terms of actually being prepared for the test. Transcenders may be expensive but the cost of failing the same exam multiple times and having to pay for retakes is even more expensive.
Cheers. | |

| Have you prepared for the exam using a practice exam? you should buy a prep test from Redmond Exams. Their questions are very similar to the real Microsoft exam questions and they have detailed explanations. | |

| Calvin1,
Sorry to hear about your failure in the 210 exam. Keep at it. If you are having difficulty, I would recommend looking at windows from an academic prospective. Try to think of the “why” behind the “how”. I don’t know, maybe this would help.

| I'm not sure of the policy of posting links here but there's a good source for technical books on the net at:
http://www.bookpool.com
There are several books that apply to the 70-210 exam.

| My advice is to wait until Transcender has another sale, and buy a whole set of MCSE exams (all 7) as a package deal. That's what I did.
It gets a lot tougher than 70-210 farther down the track, when you do 70-216, 70-217, and your design exam.

| Take it from a guy who knows failure(ie failed the 1st time I tried the A+ & CNA)It is a matter of study material trust me. The best study guides that I have found(& paid) for are Certboss.com & Test King These study guides/tests are by far the best that I have come across & are almost identical to the actual test. Failure just made me more determined(after being p.o'd) |
