Hi,

What's stopping users whom have cable access from setting up virtual private networks through via modem and enable family to get internet access? I mean it's possible isn't it? If you can have access to network resources why can't you browse?
So long as you're not selling the connections to anyone it would be as if the user was on site using the lan to browse...

Not realy sure what your talking about but When you setup VPN you can select whether connection is for yourself or all users for added protection.

Is it possible for me to dial-in via modem to a computer with vpn setup and access the internet through the vpn's connection?

yes. But you will be limited to the speed of your VPN connection to their box, so if you are not sharing the same hub/switch they are connected to, you get no improvement on the speed of your connection.

If you are on the same switch as they are, then use NAT>

Nope, I'm dialling in to the internet myself... I can connect to the vpn via dial-up but when I browse the network it says that the servers are temporarily unavailable - I can do a search for the computer I am connected to and it finds it. However I cannot find any of the other computers connected with the network - the network is just a WorkGroup, the main computer which I am connected to is a normal win2K pro - there are no win2K servers...

when I dial in say, it says my ip address is
192.168.0.136 (136 is just arbitary)
gateway is subnet mask is 255.255.255.255
and gateway is 192.168.0.136

can't browse, ICS is enabled, other computers connected to the network via NICs browse just fine... Am I missing anything?

First off you are using Dial-up therefore PPP
DHCP and if you do an IPCONFIG from the run box you will get your connection setting to your ISP right.

second you are ussing ICS for other pc in your home that are connected via nic .

When you setup ICS it allocate an IP address of 192.168.0.1 to the nic in the pc in your case the WIN2K. and set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway is your ISP assign IP address.

Other computers in your house use static IP of anything up to 192.168.0.254 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and default gatway of 192.168.0.1 and avery one using the same workgroup name .DNS server is 192.168.0.1

now from there you setup a VPN connection to your compagny server with proper setting you now access with privacy using WAN Miniport (L2TP)

From Network and Dial-up connections/local area network providing that averything is share proprely should be able to browse computer near me and access data.

I think all this if all use FAT32 but if you are running NTFS (not sure on that I have not setup that way.) PS hope I am right on most of it.

PS I still dont understand the setup u have. All this could have nothing to do with what your asking.

Err yeah, all that kinda did have nothing to do with what I am asking - it appears I am losing everyone... I know how to setup ICS and VPN.

What I am asking is - ok wait..

a) I have cable at my gf's house... the cable is plugged into the 'MAIN' computer via ethernet card '0'. Ethernet card '1' connects to the hub and 3 other computers at her house are connected via that. It is a workgroup. DHCP is enabled automatically via hardware through the cable modem.

b) I have installed a modem into the 'MAIN' computer. I have enabled "accept incoming connections" via this modem.

I was wondering whether or not when I connect to this modem via my modem at another location if I can also get internet access? I can ping the other computers' IP address' however I can only access computer 'MAIN' through 'find computers' when I try to browse the network for computers it comes up with an error. I am using Win2K pro on the 'MAIN'. Is this normal should I be able to click on 'computers near me' and see other pcs besides the one I am connected to or do I need to setup a domain instead of a workgroup? Hope this is clearer, thanks...

Sorry Dude I cannot find anything with that kind of arrangement (it would be a cheap way to get internet )For this to happen it would require some kind of binding from modems to the nic card in the MAIN (GF's)to access .

Not saying it cannot happen and would like to see more reply or any comment with a good receipe for it.

Good Luck
