| Stevet, provide a bit more information . . .
Are you logging into the same machine the printer is installed on or another networked machine? Did you share out the printer? Have you tried to add it under the other profiles?

| You will have to share the printer on the local machine that you intalled the printer on, that machine will become a print server. Now you will have to setup a printer pointing to the printer on the print server on any of the other network clients that you want to use that printer. | |

| That's exactly what I was getting at. | |

In that case, you should appreciate this:
I have this saying I use here when users ask for help without describing the issue. I tell them, "Based on the information you provided, the problem you are referring to isn't working properly and should probably be fixed." Which essentially translates into, I can't give you a soultion if you don't tell me your problem.

| the printer is a network share yes it is shared out, the problem i'm having is allowing other user who may not have logged on to the computer before getting the printer to show up automatically when they log on. there are restrictions in place to stop people from changing settings so allowing them to set it up is a no go. is there a way of setting the printer up with the administrative account and then letting other users to get automatic access to the printer. | |

| Not that I am aware of. Here I get around those situations of having to install printer drivers or software that requires admin rights by putting the user account in the local admin group, performing the task that needs to be done as them, then degrading their accounts again. I don't know if this will work in your situation. | |

Your not giving enough info like is the printer attach to a server and what windows are you running and what kind of network are you running.

| this is a perfect example of why GPO's are so nifty (yes I said nifty)
well first of all do you have a domain? if so
AD users and comps> new GPO> under user config>admin templates>control panel>printers> you coule disable the disable addition of printers and enable disable deletion of printers (it will make sense when you look at it)
then under Computer config>admin templates>printers> enable printer browsing for that particular OU or whatever object your users are
while this wouldn't automatically setup their printer it would enable them to set it up under their username

| without admin rights you cannot add a local printer, this we know. however, we have been rolling out new machines with w2k pro on them and have been able to add network printers no problem. so, are you blocking printer installation via a GPO on a domain? or a local security policy?
here's an article from MS but it's geared towards NT:
