Have been studying for the 70-210 test and and found conflicting info about Automatic Private IP addressing.

One book says these addresses are reserved:
192.168.x.x---192.168.255.255

Others say:

169.254.x.x---169.254.255.255

Does any one know which it is? I looked at the IANA site but could'nt find any info.

Thanks

Interesting, have a read of this:

http://www.winnetmag.com/Articles/I...?ArticleID=7464

Still not sure why you don't know this with your certifications!!

Thanks

Microsoft's Training Kit for 70-210 says 192.168.x.x

Another Microsoft Training CD says 169.254.x.x

I thought it was 169.254.x.x, but was not sure. I checked Technet on the Web and found 169.254.x.x

You are right, should have known it with my certifications, but started to question myself. Sorry to bother anyone with dumb questions.

We all forget things and questions ourselves now and again.

On what page are you reading that??? In my MS Press Training Kit book, on pp. 160-161 it states:

"Automatic Private IP Addressing generates an IP address in the form of 169.254.x.y (where x.y is the client's unique identifier) and a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved 169.254.0.0-169.254.255.255 for Automatic Private IP Addressing."

Sorry had it the other way around.

Training Kit says 169.254 and Ms Interactive Training CD says 192.168

All I did was ask a simple question, its been a busy day! Thanks anyway, probably best to find some place else to ask questions. Bye all.

I believe 192.168.x.x---192.168.255.255 is for ICS and 169.254.x.x---169.254.255.255 is for Automatic Private IP Addressing.

Thanks ruscorp for the reply and thanks for not being judgemental or a jerk about the simple question I asked!

Have a good day!

wasn't being judgmental - just making sure my materials were accurate.

PNA (Private Network Addressing) is 192.168. ... and APIPA is 169.254. ...

They are two separate addressing schemes.

APIPA used when there's no DHCP server available and PNA is set aside for private Intranets.

Helping is one thing, comments and remarks about what one should know or not should be left out---this has been a bad week and its only half over.

I've seen some pretty dumb questions posted here, if I can help I will, I would NEVER add comments that could offend or hurt one's feelings, we are here to help others, and along the way maybelearn something ourselves--my years of teaching taught me that.

The person posting the original reply to my question should "Chill out". Manners and common courtesy are an alien concept to some.

Maybe I could have been more tactful with my answer - but tact has never been one of my strong points therefore, I apologise if I upset your feelings.

While we're talking about private IP addresses we might as well be thorough. The three ranges of private IP addresses are:-

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)

172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)

wbafrank,Its been a bad week, I am usually pretty thick-skinned.
Apology accepted, case closed. Thanks.

In the future I will attempted to find the answer on my own before posting, which I usually do anyway.

It is a basic difference between the two though.
