| It says that when assigning permissions to data or application folders, assign the Read & Execute permission to prevent application files from being accidentally deleted or damaged by users or viruses. So virus's really can't get at them if you don't have access to them? But aren't virus's above the law so to speak? So I can do this for say the program files dir and it should be ok what about the winnt dir? would it affect anything running correctly saying that it can't write the necessary temp files or whatnot?
Also, if u don't assign a person permissions to a folder/file - u're also not denying them, so if a group doesn't have persmissions (as opposed to denying)to access a file does this mean that they can access it?
Lastly is there anyway in which you can allow a person to read a file but not save as or copy/move in any way?

| I'll take a stab at this one...
First off I wouldn't mess with permissions related to the winnt folder. It's a system folder, right? So users aren't seeing it anyway.
Second, If you don't assign permissions to a folder users still have Full Control of the folder and can read, write, execute, et. unless you remove the Everyone group from the folder permissions. The Everyone group is granted Full control by default on all newly created folders unless you explicity turn it off.
Third, For a user to only read a file and not modify it in any way you would assign the user the Read permission only to the file. Try not to Deny permissions if possible, but if the user is part of a group and the group has pernmissions to execute then the user will too and in that case the individual account would need to be set to Deny where appropriate.
I think that's right. If it's not I'm sure someone will let us know
