ok, here i go:

I am home with two computers. doing a little network (for practice for my 70-210). But I am pretending like i am the administrator of a large company.

I am using Windows 2000 (which I know wouldnt be a wise move in administering a large company) In this case i would use server right?

I wanted to know if i was using win 2000 stricly for about ten people. I wanted certain users to have access to different files and shared folder on the network. It seems on windows 2000 I would have to do everything on every computer for this. I would have to create users, passwords, permissions, security, etc on every single computer in my network? is this true?

for example if i have a network of ten people and i am adding two more people I would have to create those users along with their permissions on every computer in the network in order for each user can log into any computer in the network and get shared resourses? Is it possible to share a Mapped Network Drive?

Please help me understand this one...

You can apply permissions to groups or you can copy profiles of current users so you don't have to do it for each individual user. If you apply the permissions to a group, you can just put the users in that group and the rights will filter to their user accounts. If you copy user accounts, you only have to change their username, password, etc. Hope this helps.

Since no one has directly addressed this part of your question, I'll take a quick stab at it. First of all, you would need to create user accounts and set permissions on any computer that has resources the new users need to access. They will then be able to connect to shared resources on those machines. If there are no resources on a particular machine that the new users need to access, then there is no need to set up accounts for them on that machine.

As far as sharing a mapped drive, I don't think it can be done. A mapped drive is just a link to a resource on another machine. If you want to connect to it, you would need to make the connection to the machine that houses the physical drive. Of course you will need a user account with the appropriate permissions to do so. Hope this is helpful.

So what it really boils down to in a windows 2000 only network is that it seems like the only way for a user to access resourse is to a win 2000 computer he/she has a user account for.

I dont seem like I can create a user account on Computer A and Log in On Computer B and still access shares.

I am all messed up, so fellas dont laugh at me ok

The main thing to remember when you are doing a peer to peer network is that each computer handles it's own security, independant of the others.

Another option is even though you only have 10 computers. You could create a Domain Controller. Create all the user accounts on the Domain Controller, that way all authentication goes through 1 computer.

You could then manage resources easily through Active Directory.

Just another option.

domains are cool, I run one at home and only have the DC, my 2 pc's (not including ones for my study) and my sons, even though theres only a few pc's having a domain is so much easier (once you get it working!!)
