And today's poser is ....

Q84. Alison is planning to deploy Windows 2000 Professional on 50 computers running Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and would like to know what is the most efficient way to determine whether any of her third-party applications require updates to operate properly in Windows 2000. What would you advice?

A. To connect to the Windows Update Web site.

B. To contact the vendor of each software application.

C. To generate a compatibility report using SMS Crystal Reports snap-in.

D. To generate a compatibility report using the Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer.

Good Luck .... see you tomorrow for the answer!!

Im just now getting in depth in this part and am still learning but my guess would be D since I can just wirte the compatability script to go to the pc's and tell me the info i need. That to me would be the quickest and easiest of the choices.

The correct answer is D.

The Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer tool analyzes your system and reports potentially incompatible hardware devices and software applications. The tool compares the devices and applications on your system against a list of known issues.

You can download and run the tool before installing Windows 2000 to help ensure your installation will succeed. This check also occurs during Windows 2000 Setup.

-SMS Crystal reports snap-in applies to Microsoft Systems Management Server version 2.0.

Half the time the vendors don't even know if their application is compatible or not.

Good tip Denis. If you're running IE version 5 or later, you can download the Google Toolbar. That works really slick!

D. To generate a compatibility report using the Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer.

And the answer is ....

Correct Answers: D

A. Incorrect: The Windows Update Web site provides updates in the form of operating system service packs, hot fixes, and drivers, not third-party applications.

B. Incorrect: Contacting a vendor to determine whether Windows 2000 is supported or whether updates are available or necessary is inefficient. First determine whether an update is required, and then contact the vendor to obtain an update.

C. Incorrect: You use the SMS Crystal Reports snap-in to create reports on data stored in the SMS database, not to generate Windows 2000 compatibility data. Instead, the SMS database is populated with Windows 2000 compatibility data using a number of SMS utilities that augment the Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer program. These utilities allow for the easy distribution and automation of the Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer. The output from the Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer is then stored in the SMS 2 database. These results can then be reported by using Crystal Information for SMS.

D. Correct: From the list of answers, the Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer is the most direct way to determine whether any third-party applications require updates (also called update packs) to operate properly in Windows 2000. For greater efficiency, augment the Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer with SMS 2 or use the 32-bit Windows 2000 setup routine's /checkupgradeonly switch with an answer file so that the log it generates for each computer is centralized for easy access and analysis.

Note: Do not use the report provided by the Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer or /checkupgradeonly as a guarantee of compatibility because it tests only known software and hardware incompatibilities. Thorough application testing is a critical step in determining application readiness.
