The scenario - DSL goes USB to the PC.The PC has another network card which is hooked up to a hub. I have chosen to share the DSL connection (ics). ICS then gives the network card an ip of 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0. The client PC's network card is assigned a 168.x.x.x I can't remember. The host PC is w2k pro the client is w2k advanced server. Does this matter i don't think so, could be wrong. Been to Microsft's web site followed the instruction there,the help file and now here. Went back to the basics. assigned 192.168.0.2 on the 255.255.255.0 subnet to make sure the machines would even ping and they did. Now i have the network cables plugged into the standard ports on the hub. This just hit me. Does the host machine need to be plugged into the uplink port? Any ideas ???

I dont think so, Microsoft recommend that you don't assign manualy IP addresses when you use ICS, in this case, the PC with the ICS feature enabled will provide the IP to the another PC's (lets think on this way).
Be sure that the DHCP on your network is disabled.
To know if the IP addreses for the client PC it's OK you need to be sure that the IP is on the range 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254 (192.168.0.1 is reserved for the host)if the IP is not on this range, your IP is provided by APIPA (range 162.254.0.1 - 162.254.255.254).

Thanks for your reply. I understand what you are saying, I only assigned the IP address to make sure that the machines could see each other, which they did. Then i went back to obtain an IP address automatically. I looked at the same link when i got stuck. I'll have to check the dhcp settings on the host? Thanks again !!

Just ask to you this question...
Is the IP from the computer that i want to give Internet Access configured with a static IP or is recibing an IP from a DHCP?

If you have an static ip address then let it to take an automatic ip.
If you have an ip from a DHCP then remember...
The DHCP Service must be deactivated on the network, no matter which computer is providing this service.
If you have a DHCP Service active, just deactivate it.

It is setup to receive ip address automaticaly. I gotcha on the disable dhcp service on the host. I don't think that service is stopped. I'll have to check that out ! Thanks for your help. I won't be able to get back to that machine until this saturday, i'll let you know then. Thanks again.

Not sur how his gonna do ,but I look at the link and it match all my setting to the T,for various OS I'm using.I did all the clients manualy but the result was the same.It even had pictures ,that's my kind of reading. good luck .

I got to the machine today and was unable to make ics work. I disabled the dhcp server service on client pc and left the dhcp client active, dns was running on the client pc so I disabled it as well. Went to the link http://www.microsoft.com/windows200...conn_overvw.htm . tried the different possibilties. When i set it up for dhcp the host was not assigning a ip. But would get a ip after i pinged the client pc from the client using the netbios name, then it would assign apipa. This is really wierd. I tried on my home lab and was able to make it work, but can't make it work on my clients. They just sprung this on me when i got there that they want to go wireless on a laptop and a palm device. Looks like i'm gonna have to change out the dsl modem that is usb interface to the host computer with a dsl modem that is rj-45. This would make life a lot easier. Well thanks for your help and all. At least i know that i can do it. Thanks again.
