Hello to everyone.
Does anybody suggest a good hub (or better )a switch but not an expensive one?
I plan to set up a small network in my home. I' ll start with 2 desktop and one laptop but soon I ll connect other 2 pc too. So I am thinking more of an 8 port solution. Moreover, I currently have a dial up Internet connection and also a cable modem.
Thanks in advance.

Well you don't need anything expensve for a home network so I'd get a Netgear or Linksys 8 port hub.

Thank you PotatoHead,
Is anything else that I sould consider about a switch?
I am a little confused on dial up connection and cable modem connection. It is a dummy question but I wonder if I am right. I think that you just plugg in the cable the correct one and it detects by it self which kind of connection is going to run? But dial up modems have RJ 11 cable and my cable has RJ 45, so this is mean that I have to buy also an adapter?

Your workstations aren't even going to need a modem to get internet off of the server computer. It will use the RJ-45. Is that what you are lookin for? You'll need 2 NIC's for the server computer, one that goes to the modem and one that goes to the hub.

Yes you right. But I am confused because I use my NIC card for the cable modem. So I have to install a second one for the switch.
I was thinking that I would use the switch to connect the cable modem in order to provide Internet connection and the 2 pc subsequently.

Your on the right track. Buy a hub or switch. Connect the cable modem RJ45 to your uplink on the hub/switch. Plug the rest of the computers using there rj45s into the free ports on the hub. Caution do not plug computer into port directly next to uplink if uplink is being used.

And thats all you do. All computers should be able to talk to each other and if you are lucky your ISP will allocate you IPs for all your pcs.

If not then you are going to set up NAT or ICS on your server, in which case you will need 2 NIcs like potatohead said.

Hey Chrini71,

Do like I did and buy the LinkSys 4port Cable/DSL Router (BEFSR41) off the Internet for under $75 now and also use your hub. I have nine PCs running seeing I added my old 8-port 3Com hub as well (I have two rooms with computers) I saved on cabling, connectors and wall jacks!

Otherwise go with the bigger model from LinkSys (BEFSR81) and you can get it on the web for about $140USD. I will be upgrading to this sometime soon myself. My ISP is wanting to try and charge for each PC connected to the Internet even if you are hiding behind a Router -- Ba$tard$ -- Going back to EarthLink/MindSpring folks!

Download ZoneAlarm (zoneLabs) for software firewall until you know what ports need to be "open" or "closed" on the router/switch! This works great, is simple to setup and fast. Besure to change the PASSWORD in the BOX once you set it up!!

You won't need but one NIC for each PC unless you want to also go wireless then you need to look at the LinkSys (BEFW11S4).

Here is a site you might find helpful for the LinkSys Router and what not:

Just be sure to checkout the "Whacked Photos" section on the left (Damn Funny)

Wireless!

A little more expensive, but saves in the long run!

(Setting up one in my Attorneys' office. (Going to recoup some of my hard earned $$$ ))
