And today's poser is ....

Q57. Alison installs a USB printer on her Windows 2000 Professional system but it is not functioning. Alison looks in Device Manager and notices that the root hub has an exclamation point in a yellow circle next to it. Which of the following could be the cause of the problem?

A. Windows 2000 Professional does not support USB devices.

B. Alison is not an administrator and therefore will not see whether devices are functioning properly in Device Manager.

C. The system's BIOS is not assigning an IRQ to the root USB controller.

D. The USB printer has hardware problems.

And the answer is ....

Correct Answers: C

In order for the USB device driver to load, it must be assigned an IRQ in the systems BIOS (this is usually IRQ 9).

Windows 2000 has built in support for USB devices. If Alison is able to open Device Manager and see the the USB root hub is not functioning then it is not a permissions issue.

If the USB printer was having hardware problems, Alison would most likely notice this by her system freezing, the exclamation point in the yellow circle points to a driver issue, not a hardware issue.
