Network Client Question

| If your domain controllers are Windows 2000, and your workstations are a mixture of NT, 98, 95, 3.1's ... I know that you have to install a network client to the workstations so that they can utilize the 2000 Active Directory, but it is my understanding that you don't have to install the network client to all of these OS's ... some of them, like NT, I believe, will work be able to use Active Directory automatically. Does anyone know to which OS's you would need to install the Active Directory in order to have them use the 2000 Active Directory? Thanks! | |

| From what I have read, you need to isntall the Directory Service client on windows 95 and 98. Windows NT doesn't have a network client of available so that it won't be possible for it to take full advantage of what active directory has to offer. Although it will still be able to logon to the domain.
As far as windows 3.1.. I do not know.
Maybe some other members can clarify it for us. | |

| Microsoft has developed extensions for the Windows® 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT® 4.0 operating systems that allow those client platforms to take advantage of features provided by the Windows 2000 Active DirectoryTM service. These client extensions were developed for customers who wish to deploy Windows 2000 Server in environments with Windows 95-, Windows 98-, and Windows NT 4-based client workstations.

| I'm confused by the link supplied ... it sounds like NT4, 98, and 95 can use Active Directory ... I'm still not sure though, whick have to have the network client installed vs. automatically being able to work. | |

| keep in mind that gaining access to the network and being able to access and search AD are two different things...
Also, for all your clients that have problems with AD, I recommend either an upgrade, or using terminal server |
