if I am wrong, but I am sure I have read a post that stated they were having this trouble I can't find it myself - but I think it was due to the Video NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX 32MB.

Hopefully this might jog someone's memory!!

win2k never liked "fancy" video cards... by the way, if you are running the /checkupgradeonly switch, then you are not installing -- just trying to see what would happen if you did..

Well if it not that, which has been proved, have a look at this link it gives you what causes Kernel32.dll error messages

The link didn't work but this is what it said:

Definition of Kernel32.dll Error Messages The Kernel32.dll file is a 32-bit dynamic link library file that is found in Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millenium Edition (Me). The Kernel32.dll file handles memory management, input/output operations, and interrupts. When you start Windows, Kernel32.dll is loaded into a protected memory space so that other programs do not take over that memory space.

On occasion, you may receive an invalid page fault (IPF) error message. This error message occurs when a program tries to access the Kernel32.dll protected memory space. Occasionally, the error message is caused by one particular program, and other times the error message is provoked by multiple files and programs.

If the problem results from running one program, the program needs to be replaced. If the problem occurs when you access multiple files and programs, the damage is likely caused by damaged hardware.

You may want to clean boot the computer to help you identify the particular third-party memory-resident software. Note that programs that are not memory-resident can also cause IPF error messages.

The following conditions can cause Kernel32.dll error messages:

-Damaged swap file
-File allocation damage
-Damaged password list
-Damaged or incorrect version of the Kernel32.dll file
-Damaged registry
-Hardware, hot CPU, over clocking, broken power supply, RF noise, ground bounce, or bad hard disk controller
-BIOS settings for Wait states, RAM timing, or other BIOS settings
-Third-party software that is damaged or incorrectly installed
-.dll files that are saved to the desktop
-Non-existent or broken Temp folder
-A control panel (.cpl) file is damaged
-Incorrect or damaged hardware driver
-Incorrectly installed printer drivers or HP Jetadmin drivers
-Damaged Java Machine
-Damaged .log files
-Damaged entries in the History folder
-Incompatible or damaged dynamic link library files
-Viruses
-Damaged or incorrect Msinfo32.exe file
-Low disk space
-Other problems that depend on the Kernel file

What OS is it running now???
Have you disabled or removed any antivirus software?
Also, it is always a good idea from a support standpoint to have the latest BIOS. That way you iliminate bugs from that area.

Just because the GeForce 2 MX400 doesn't cost $300, that doesn't mean it's not a "fancy" video card. And gaming oriented GeForce or Radeon is a fancy video card. I suppose even a Voodoo... (better not exclude that one!) A typical video card for a server might be a dual monitor Matrox or older ATI card. Most servers or client workstations don't need a 32 0r 64MB card. Although that's pretty much the standard nowadays!!!

any card running better than S3 virge engine *is* a fancy video card on a client machine in my mind

Fancy is not a technical term by the way
hehe
If a card has good driver support then windows 2000 will support it period.
Nvidia is top of the line for driver support.
Don`t do the upgrade.
Do a full install using fat32 that will keep most of your data intact.
keep it a dual boot until you get everything working in 2000.

I do not know why, but I always enjoyed that word "fancy" for some darned reason... I guess it just strikes my... fancy
chodan

LOL
One way to rule the beeatch out
is to stick in another video card and then do the upgrade.
Let us know if that works.

BTW an S3 Virge is fancy compared to my first graphics card hehe
it used 1 meg of system ram of which I only had 8.
freak

I remember my first S3 virge card... I got it right around the time Doom came out and was supposed to be cutting edge -- which even at the time it was not

Funny how yesterday top of the line is today's top of the dog pile..

SO true!!! I could contribute to that dog pile too! I remember my first S3 card... TV/out & everything.... of course it didn't work very well, so I didn't use it....

Actually the partiton is FAT32 , all my important data is there so I don't want to experiment with partitions until I got another HD to do a backup....

I will test another card there and see what happens.

I tryed a full install running Winnt.exe from DO Prompt...the 1st phase ends fine, but when I restart the computer , it says: "NTLDR not found...reboot the computer.." I think this has nothing to do with the first Kernel error (running checkupgradeonly swith with winnt32.exe)....

Any advise?

Thanks

freak, you canīt imagine the ammoount of video cards that i have in my hands in the past...

my first "good" video card was a trident ISA 512k or less!!! a good card for a 286 computer, because was a VGA card and when some people use EGA in some 386, i have real and good colors for banner and some pretty screensavers. in this time, the pic format was a GIF and everybody say "ouuhh, what a card"

after that, i have another tridents, and s3, etc...

i remember my first ATI card. never see so serious hardware and software togheter!!!

i have duke nukem 3d game with a 486 33 mhz and i see the game too slowsly. so i buy my first PCI card and the graphics was so fast!!!!!

i use in this times the bench programs to see the speed of the card.

after that, i start to recover several cards and types, iīm crazy when i see the agp cards in some magazines, so when i see a mobo and agp video card with a heatsink i build a system with this card inmediately!!

after that i have several cards. i was the one in Cuba to build a system with a Voodoo card. i buy a 3Dfx Voodoo Rush and was amazing to see Need for Speed 2 and Tomb raider 1 with real 3d graphics and speed.

after that, i have a voodoo 2 card.

later, voodoo3, nvidia tnt, tnt2, an intel 740, gforce, gforce 2 gtx, gforce 2mx, voodoo4, voodoo5, voodoo 3 2000 and 3000, and several ati models, like ati all in wonder, all in wonder pro, and a normal radeon system

this is the cards FOR my systems, another cards for business / sells....

pretty good hardware passing for my hands!!!

Hey Gabriel-

I bet it is a software issue with another application -- are you running QuickBooks?

If so, try this possible solution:

This error message is generally the results of having Quickbooks installed on your system. To workaround this problem, rename Qbconv32.dll to Qbconv32.dl_, for each copy you discover.

After the upgrade, you can rename Qbconv32.dl_ to Qbconv32.dll, so Quickbooks will function.

Let us know if this is your problem and the FIX you wanted.

Then I will post my problem with Windows 2000 Pro and installing.

Doug Black

PS: I thought that M$ Readiness Analyzer would of picked it up as a BAD SW application

Your story sounds like me.
I learned quite a bit building my gaming systems early on.
I was the first in my area to own a 3D card.
I have spent way to much money playing with PC hardware
But it was worth it.
I was introduced to networking by Doom, Descent and then Quake came along and blew us all away.
It used TCP/IP!! "WOW" I thought. hehe

same here! A buddy and I built the first Quake server for our local ISP... Quite a learning experience!

Let's face it, if it wasn't for 3D gaming, I don't think that the video card industry would have taken off as fast as it has...

yes!!!
DOOM / duke nukem 3d / need for speed 1,2,3,4,5 / command conquer / red alert / warcraft, all this using internet, network games in my work (hide from boss) with a lot of participants!!!

nice experience. now a little time to play, no more the old times.... but maybe i can have some time to play some nice games anytime!!

for audio cards the same!!! iīm first in cuba i think having a audio card!! was a MONO 8 bits card!!!! but nobody have audio cards in that time!!!! i see warcraft 1 with my first creative card, stereo, 16 bits... amazing!!!!! i capture wav audio files in DOS only with DOS commands!!!! mp3 compression with Dos commands too, with pentium 100 Mhz computer that use almost 1 hour to compress a simple audio track!!!!!

now i compress in less than 10 seconds a wav file to mp3pro file!!!!! amazing!!!!

i have almost all Creative audio card models, all sound blaster live models, now i have sound blaster audigy mp3 / gamer and want to buy the pro ... etc....

a lot of learning playing with all this!!!

and for overclocking!! anything, i never have a processor without overclock. i overclock ALL procesors i have!!!
