Go to this site:
http://www.nttoolbox.com/

It has a lot of great tools. Go to downloads, admin tools, and download the NT Admin boot disk, that should be all you need!

Hope this helps!!!

Although leave it to Microsoft to try to hide the fact that the password CAN INDEED be reset. I find that article pretty funny!!! LOL I guess it was published in april 2000. A lot has changed since then!!! This indeed is a Microsoft security model, and we all know how secure Microsoft OSes are!!!! If you don't want to edit the registry to reset your password, there are utilities you can buy to reset it, such as NT Locksmith.

No, you do not have to reinstall. This is a tool that everyone needs!!! Go to this site...

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

Go down to "How to get it?" Click on bootdisk, instructions, & image to download...

Print out this page, it has the instructions on it. Then go down to "download" & download the "bd011022.zip" & "rawrite2.zip." Extract these files to a directory (example: c:\tools), and then run this command from the command prompt:

C:\tools\rawrite2 -f bd011022.bin -d a:

This will create your Linux boot disk with the reset password utility. Then boot from this disk to reset you password. You can follow the prompts and accept the defaults for pretty much everything.

Your path to the registry directory should be winnt/system32/config which is the default option. You should NOT have to disable safekey. Then change your password.... you will have to type "y" to accept any changes and then enter. It should say "changed"... Then type "!" to exit, & type "y" to make the changes & writeback the changes to the NT disk/filesystem.

Then you will get a "#", it is done... Just press Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot & you can now get into W2K. This has worked numerous times for me.

Hope this helps, let me know if I can help in any way!

Very handy tool. I've used it many times. Just be sure to NOT disable SYSKEY in the process.

Yes, you don't want to disable SYSKEY! Results are not good! Corrupts the SAM, trusts relationships, not good.

My Life Saver Teck Shark !!!!
Help Me Plz. I went to the site you posted here and did everythings, but Im having a problem here:
which hives files do u want to edit
{sam system security}: and I hit enter
it said copying sam system security to/temp
NO SUCH FILE OR DIRECTORY

then it went back and ask me what is the full path registry dir and which hives files again, keep on repeating.

What should I do ???

Sorry giving you so much trouble teaching me!!!

No problem man.....

Make sure you downloaded the tool from my second link. http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/
Not the first link (that one is outdated).

Then make sure you enter the correct path to the registry... %windir%\system32\config
When I entered the incorrect path I received the same error as you.

If you had a fresh install of Windows 2000, it should be winnt\systen32\config, & if you upgraded it is probably windows\system32\config.

DO NOT disable syskey!

Good Luck, keep me posted!

Right now, I still having this problem about writing SAM file into the drive.
same thing happened when I come up to this point when they ask me
which hives files do u want to edit
{sam system security}: and I hit enter
it said copying sam system security to/temp
"NO SUCH FILE OR DIRECTORY" <----
then it went back and ask me what is the full path registry dir and which hives files again, keep on repeating.

Sound like it unsecuessfully write or edit SAM file before it let me change the password u know.

So SADDDDDDD, dont know what to do

...I'm not familiar with Linux (yet). Does this procedure work with NTFS?
Teck Shark

You should have no trouble running this procedure on NTFS. I've used it on NT 4.0, 2000, & XP machines. Works like a charm...

ITMAN,
Are you entering the correct path to the registry? The only way I could duplicate your error message was to enter the wrong path to the registry. Gave the same error, "NO SUCH FILE OR DIRECTORY". So make sure the right path (drive letter...etc.)is entered. Once I entered the correct path (Manually), it worked just fine!

A default path should either be:
C:\winnt\system32\config or
C:\windows\system32\config

I just ran the wizard on a 2000 prof. machine to join a domain, during which I added a local administrator account. When I tried to log on locally as administrator, the password was blank (while my domain password was not). Could this be your problem (blank password)?
