| I have a problem on installing my dual boot operating system. Please help me out.
I had Windows Me preinstalled in my computer by Compaq. Since I'm working on my MCSE, I installed Win2K and made it dual boot. However, I couldn't start my Windows Me after the Win2K installed even though I could see Windows Me in the start manu of the dual boot.When I click Windows Me on the manu, it shows a message "I/O erro to access to bootsect.dos". I tried to look for this file through Search but couldn't find it(I had released Hide File under File View).I checked Boot.ini, it is OK. I checked drive E where the Windows Me is located, everything looks fine.I could even open all the files of the drive under my Win2K envionment. It seems everything of Window Me is there but the question is that HOW TO GET IN.Does anybody know this file, bootsect.dos? How could I get into this and correct this problem? Thanks.

| Hi,
I cant give you an actual answer but I can tell you that bootsect.dos is a copy of the bootsector before win2k was installed. When you get your "select your operating system" prompt during bootup.. when you choose win ME it should be linking to that bootsect.dos
Lets see if the other guys actually have fixes now

| ok... im not sure i understand correctly... you installed 2k before or after me? because if you installed me 2nd and didnt do it on the c drive that could be your problem, im not sure if this is still an issue with me but with 95-98 the os had to be installed on the c drive in a dual boot scenerio... if thats not the case i would reccommend formatting completely and just installing 2k | |

| Did you install 2k with a NTFS file system? | |

| Thank you for responding my post. To answer your questions first.
I did have my Win Me installed before Win2K.
The Win2K is formated under NTFS.
The MS link you provide is good, but it is exactly opposite to my problem. The title of the link is "How to Enable Dual Boot After You Install Windows Me on a Windows 2000-based Computer (Q293401)". My problem is to know how to enable dual boot after installing Win2K on Windows Me based cumputer.
Since my computer is preloaded by Compaq, I don't have Windows Me disk. What I have is the so-called Quick Restore with all software in it. I have to erease every thing in my hard drive in order to reinstall Windows Me. That is why I hate to take this option.
More over, my boot.ini looks fine as follows:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0
)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partiti
on(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
C:\ = "Microsoft Windows"
By the way, my Windows Me is located in the root directory, drive C.

IMO, win2k has to use FAT 32 format under the dual boot. since win me are FAT 32.
correct me if i am wrong, thx

| i would suggest downloading 2k drivers from compaq's site and just installing 2k, there's no use for m.e. anyway | |

You don't have to install Win2K to a FAT32 partition unless you install it to the same partition with WinME or Win9x.
|
| Get win98 Boot disk
Run fdisk Delete Partions .
Restore Pc With Compaq restore disk .
with WinMe running load Win2k as Fat 32
Or
Partion Hard Drive .
Load WinMe on C:/ Load Win2k On D:/ as NTFS
