Author #2 Question

Your have a Windows 2000 Professional computer that has a removable disk device installed. The device can use storage modules of varying sizes. You use these storage modules to transfer graphics filed between your location and a printing company. The printing company uses Windows NT 4.0 service pack 3.
You insert a new 20GB disk device into your computer. When you attempt to format it as FAT32 with the default options, you receive the following error message “Windows was unable to complete the format.”
You need to format the device so that you can use it to send a large graphic file to the printing company. How should you format the device?

A. As FAT 16 with a 4-KB cluster size
B. As FAT 32 with a 1-KB cluster size
C. As FAT 32 with a 4-KB cluster size
D. As NTFS with a 4-KB cluster size

The answer is A, right? The reason I say A is because NT4 doesn't "like" FAT32 or NTFS. What are your thought on this one??

The biggest FAT16 partition with a 4K cluster size is going to be pretty small. NT4 doesn't support FAT32 unless you install custom file system drivers. NT4 SP3 supports NTFS, although I believe SP4 is required for SP5 support (which W2K uses).

My vote would be D.

Ans: D is not correct because you can't tell another company to upgrade thier software.

DivxGuy if it was within the same company that would be the better solution.

So we are left with the following.

NT 4 can not read FAT 32.
NT 4 with SP 3 can not read NTFS 5.

Therefore the only alternative is to use FAT 16.

This Ans is within the context of the questioned asked.

That was the same conclusion I came to. Thanks Clangashe!

I wasn't 100% sure if it was impossible to share a Win2K-formatted NTFS partition between the two without upgrading the NT4 machine to SP4.

A FAT16 partition with a 4K cluster size will only occupy a small portion of a 20gb drive, with the maximum size being around 4GB (cluster size is 32K or 64K). Depending on how big the "large" graphics file was, they might not be able to fit it into a FAT16 partition with a 4K cluster size.

In retrospect, I suppose the reason they specified SP3 on the NT4 machine was to check for knowledge of NTFS 5 compatibility.

My first choice would be none of the above, my second choice would have to be A. but come on they can't be serious. you will end up wasting about 80% or more of the drive.
I would say ask them to upgrade to SP4 with support for NTFS 5.

By weary of making the statement that NT 4 doesn't like NTFS. NT 4 works best with NTFS just not NTFS v5 which Win 2000 uses.

This qustion was also on my exam. I choose the answer of "A". For the reason being, NT doesn't support FAT32

No-one said NT 4 does not like ntfs.

NT 4 with SP3 can not read a NTFS 5 partion.

All MS is trying to do is see if you know your file types.

From what I can gather from this thread, is that this was a question someone got in an exam.

Look at this quote where is clearly says NT4 doesn't "like" FAT32 or NTFS.

That is what I was referring to. There's a lot of new prople to the NT world and this might of confused them.

I got this question on my exam as well.
It completely caught me off guard and I swear I just stared at it for a couple of minutes saying to myself "Hmmmmm....."

Well, I chose "A" as well. You know "B" and "C" are wrong. That leaves us "A" and "D". I figured they threw out the NT4 SP3 comment to trip up someone who doesn't know that NT4 SP3 doesn't like NTFS5, so that eliminated "D" in my mind.

My apologies

I must be going blind. I had to read the thread twice before I found that quote.

Just hit me over the and tell me to shutup

All the best to you.
