And today's poser is ....

Q27. Your Pentium III computer running Windows 2000 Professional has a 40xCD-ROM drive with a headphone jack. You insert your favourite audio CD into the drive and plug a new pair of headphones into the jack on the fron of the CD-ROM drive, but there is no audible sound. What is the most likely cause?

A. Windows 2000 does not support the sound card.

B. Digital CD Playback is enabled for the CD-ROM drive.

C. The CD-ROM drive is not connected to the sound card.

D. Digital CD Playback is disabled for the CD-ROM drive.

Good Luck .... see you later for the answer!!

Have to go with B on this one!

If Digital CD Playback is enabled for the CD ROM drive, audio output to the headphone jack is disabled.

This is a complex question.
Correct answer MUST be B in this scenario, but is a tedious question. I check B answer as a correct answer but here i have some misleeading points...

A. Windows 2000 does not support the sound card. INCORRECT. YOU ARE USING THE PHONE PLUG IN THE FRONT OF THE CD. YOU ARE NOT USING THE SOUND CARD FOR LISTENING YOUR AUDIO CD....

B. Digital CD Playback is enabled for the CD-ROM drive. CORRECT. (80% OF THE CDROM DRIVERS IN THE MARKET, WHEN YOU ACTIVATE DIGITAL AUDIO, BLOCK THE ANALOG MODULE AUDIO SECTION INSIDE THE CDROM. SO, YOU ARE UNABLE TO GET AUDIO SIGNAL IN THE FRONT OF THE CDROM, THAT IS A ANALOG SIGNAL.

C. The CD-ROM drive is not connected to the sound card. INCORRECT. YOU ARE USING THE FRONT INTERNAL CDROM AUDIO HEADPHONES PLUG. YOU DONīT NEED A AUDIO CARD TO HEAR MUSIC IN THIS WAY.

D. Digital CD Playback is disabled for the CD-ROM drive. INCORRECT. IF DIGITAL PLAYBACK IS DISABLED, THE CDROM WORKS NORMALLY, WITH ALL THEIR ANALOG MODULES WORKING AND SO, HEADPHONES PLUG DELIVER ANALOG AUDIO SIGNAL FOR YOUR HEADPHONES.

AS I SAY: THIS IS A TRICKY, CONFUSING QUESTIONS. MY CD / DVD PERMITS THE DIGITAL READING WITHOUT CUT THE ANALOG AUDIO IN THE FRONT OF THE CDROM.

SORRY. YOU ARE WRONG. YOU DONīT NEED A SOUND CARD TO LISTEN AUDIO USING A FRONT MINI-STEREO PLUG IN THE FRONT OF YOUR CDROM.

YOU DONīT NEED A COMPUTER EITHER!!!!

IF YOU HAVE A OLD AT POWER SOURCE AND YOU PUT YOUR MOLEX CONECTOR TO YOUR CDROM SO YOU CAN PROVIDE HIM WITH POWER SOURCE, YOU CAN USE YOUR CDROM AND LISTENING AUDIO USING THE FRONT CONECTOR. YOU DONīT NEED ANYTHING MORE, THE CDROM HAVE A DIGITAL / ANALOG CONVERSION MODULE INSIDE.

And the answer is ....

Correct Answers: B

A. Incorrect: It is unlikely that the sound card is part of the audio playback facility available from the headphone jack on the fron of the CD-ROM drive.

B. Correct: If Digital CD Playback is enabled for a CD-ROM drive, audio output from the headphone jack on the CD-ROM drive is disabled.

C. Incorrect: The headphone jack on the front of a CD-ROM drive will function as long as the CD-ROM drive is connected to an internal or external power source and the play instruction can be sent to the device. You should assume that the CD-ROM is playing the audio CD because the question does not say that the CD is not playing, just that nothing is heard through the headphone jack.

D. Incorrect: Disabling Digital CD Playback will enable the headphone jack output as explained earlier.

Hello Wbafrank.

This is a good question and the answer is the valid in this case. But iīm see important to say that not all cdrom drivers block the internal analog module audio when the operating system request digital output.

i.e: my DVD rom and my CDRW use digital output for Windows 2k and i hear audio without problems using the headphone connector.

nice one.
best regards

I actually had this happen to my latest computer. Took me forever to figure out why I couldn't get any sound. In fact, I think I had to call tech support!!!
