Set up Calendar for client
|

| Hi all,
I'm not a Microsoft guy so this may sound like a dump question.
I need to set up a calendar on a client machine, who has Windows 2000 PRO. The client is connected to an NT 4.0 Exchange Server. I need to set him up so that he can view other people's calendar on the network - basically connected to an Exchange Server. Will anyone please show me to set this up. Believe it or not.... I haven't started the MCSE track yet... after i'm done with my CCIE, i will take MCSE.
I appreciate any feedback.

| Thanks for the feedback. I hope this will work. I will try it tonight.
This client (WIN 2K Professional) just got a new computer so I have to do the set up from scratch. How will I set up his email using Exchange Server? His email is already set up in Exchange Server. Now I just have to set up his computer to connect to the Exchange Server.
Can you give me some insights of how to set up the client's email (w/ Windows 2000 Professional) to talk with the Exchange Server? I appreciate it.

| Aren't you using Outlook? I take it this client's computer is on a network. What are the other people using?
Sorry, too many questions. Just trying to claify the situation.

| Yup... it's outlook. other people uses Win 98 except for him. His email is already set up in Exchange Server; i just need to set him up.
i'm going to try troubleshooting this myself tonight... first time getting my hands on Exchange Server...
Thanks, | |

This Microsoft stuff is easy isn't it? Just look at all this "hands-on" your getting.
When do you plan to finish your CCIE? Look forward to seeing you more often in this forum!!

| I want to thank all of you for your insights.
I've had a chance to play around with Outlook for the first time. Usually, I set up Linux and IRIS mail utilities, but now I have to play with outlook which is very new to me.
WBAFRANK - I tried following the instruction on the link you provided. And what I realized was that the client "Tools" does not have the "Services" option in his Outlook application. When I select on "Tools" drop-down menu, I saw "Accounts", "Customize", and "Options".
I thought the option "Accounts" will be similar to "Services" but it wasn't. The client currently is set up using POP3 email. His POP3's incoming/outgoing addresses are found in "Accounts". He has Outlook version 9.0.0.2711.
So I'm not able to complete the set up...
What should I do? I think I need to download the Outlook "Exchange" version. Is that right?
Please advise anyone.
thanks, | |

| Are you setup for "Internet Only", or "Corporate/Workgroup"?
What about the links I posted? Were they any help?

| Mrfixit...
Thanks for your feedback... i feel dumb for asking these questions, but i figure it doesn't hurt to be dumb sometimes...
anyway, I tried to follow the instructions given on the link you provided. I didn't find any Wizard Customized Installation option. I inserted Disk 1 and select Setup and a window pops up with the option of Repair, Add/Remove Features, and Remove Office. How do I get to the customized installation (if any)?
I appreciate your feedback.

| Is Outlook setup in the Internet mode? If so, you won't be able to see any "Services". And I apologise for the previous links, that was if you are deploying Outlook.
Try this link, it references Outlook 2000 specifically. Hope it helps.

| How do I upgrade from "Internet Mail Only" to "Corporate/Workgroup"? I think this is where I was having problems... As soon as I get that "Corporate/Workgroup" status, I think I can take it from there... I hope.
I can't believe why Microsoft makes it so complicated. There's no logic or standard way of doing this like Unix. This is why I've been avoiding them for so long. It's even harder than installing a router... and it shouldn't be

| I think I know how to do this... it's in the "Mail Delivery" option. let me get back to you on this. thanks | |

| You need to know the users Exchange server, example: EXNY02. Once mapped to that, you locate the users account on that server by typing in his account name, usually his user log in, and then click on Check Name. It should populate the box with his name, usually last name first. It is pretty straight forward from there.
As for changing mail types:
(To change the installation type from IMO to CW, follow these steps:
On the Tools menu, click Options .
On the Mail Delivery Tab, click Reconfigure Mail Support . (This will be a button in the right corner of this screen.)
On the E-mail Service Options page, click to select the mail support option you are switching to(Corporate/Workgroup). Click Next.
Read the warning message and then click Yes. Outlook will close.
Start Outlook. The Windows Installer will start and install the required files.)
Good luck. | |

| wow it worked...
I did it for the guy with Win2k Pro... everything went well for him... i guess i didn't have a hard time with this one because his account was already set up in Exchange Server.
I tried doing the same thing for the gal with Win98, but hers didn't work. like the one above, her account was also already set up in Exchange Server.
here's how i go about configuring her Exchange account (after enabling Corporate/Working):
TOOLS -> SERVICES -> ADD -> MICROSOFT EXCHANGE SERVER -> enter MICROSOFT EXCHANGE SERVER <name> -> enter MAILBOX <name> -> double click CHECK NAME (found as her name is underlined) -> OK -> X -> reboot
but unfortunately it didn't work. I checked the Exchange Server to make sure her name is synchronized accordingly and her email address is spelled out correctly - no problem there... her computer was able to "ping" successfully and she could access all the SHARED files on the network, including the SHARED folder on an Exchange server where i created a folder up for testing purposes. so every thing was good, but her email couldn't log.
another thing i tried was creating a whole new email account on her computer, but had no luck. I think there must be something ambiguous going on...
what should i do now? i'm going to continue troubleshooting this... it's kinda fun
anyway, i'm glad I was able to configure one client... but I still have a few more to go... yike
it's been a good day so far though... thanks to MRFIXIT... you've helped me conquered the first microsoft battle...

| Glad I could help! Don't know why the W98 client is having so many issues. If she has an account, and you have her connected to the Exchange server, and her user name populates! Does not make sense!!
When you entered her server info and user name, on the server properties, there are several radio buttons. One is "Automatically check connection state." Is that checked?
Just a thought. | |
| peanutbutter 2002-02-04, 8:00 pm |
| yes... "Automatically check connection state" is checked. Strange problem it is... it may have something to do with server itself... granting permission rights? I will use different methodologies to troubleshoot this problem.
I'll let you know later.

| I think I know why she can't access her mailbox. She doesn't have permission.
I tried changing the "Delivery" option (in Tools -> Services -> Delivery -> "Deliver new mail to the following location": [enter Mailbox - <David>]), I got an error message: "The default set of folders could not be specified. You do not have permission to log on." The question is how can I create permission for her to access her own mailbox?
The strangest thing is that I tried creating a new user (on a different computer) and I didn't have this problem. Her account was already set up when I got my hands onto this configuration.
I appreciate any feedback.

| Are you logging in, or is the user logging in? This will make a difference. If you are logged on under your domain account, then try to access her mail, you will get this message. The user must be logged onto the machine in order to get access to her mail. | |

| Is this Exchange 2000 or 5.5? 2000 relies so heavily on the Active Directory that I believe you may need to load ADClient on the Win98 machine. Just a thought..
I think I remember reading something about the ADClient last night.

| If not, I should be able to help you. (But then again, maybe not...) ) I did this myself this week. I just installed an Exchange Server and set up all my clients. I have one win2k machine and all the others are 98.
If you still need help, let me know....

| I wanted to thank you all of you for your insightful feedbacks. I was able to set up the client just fine after some troubleshooting. After finishing last week, I've gone to a new project. This time is setting up routers which are not that difficult to me.
Anyway, here's how I've made it to work. It was all about synchronization. I've had to go into Exchange Server NT, deactivate the client that was having problems, and re-activate her again. This time I've made sure that I'm using the same user name retrieved from the server domain so that it doesn't have any authication problem. And that was it. It was that simple, but obviously took me a while to get.
This week I have a new project that I have to work on, installing Exchange Server 2000 for a new client. I've just started the project today and was beginning to have some problems already when setting up ES2K. I did exactly what the book advises: setting up /domainprep, /forestprep, and making sure the network is connected properly with the ES. I got stuck in the "Component Selection" Installation Wizard page. The "Next" field was not an option.
Again, I appreciate any feedback.
Thanks, | |
