| I am very sad today My Windows 2000 is just not performing too well. I've created a Peformance log which reveals the following:
Processor: %ProcessorTime: 95
System: Processor Queue Length: 3
Memory: Pages/sec: 10
PhysicalDisk: Avg Disk Queue Length: 1
Paging File: %Usage: 25
I don't know what I should do to improve performance. Would you please help me?
(Select the Best Choice)
A. Add a 2nd Processor
B. Add Memory
C. Replace the Hard Disk with a bigger, faster one.
D. Increase the size of the paging file.
Good luck and see you tomorrow for the answer!! | |

| Holy smokes Spid! 95% processor time? Plus, the processor queue length suggests the processor is the limiting factor. Paging file% and Avg.Disk queue length looks alright which removes answer C and D.
I'll go with answer (A) Add a 2nd processor to help those numbers of yours. | |

| Hmm, well buying a second processor would only take up the time if it overflows(i think)
Memory to me, wouldnt seem to work.
Harddisk...not really.
I'll have to default to increasing the paging file(D)
Mind you my experience with Windows200 is minimal, but I like participating

| Hey what the hell I'd go for all of the above! But I don't see those little boxes ! LOL | |
|
| Hey Slinky thanks for the link to that site....it is very helpful for me trying to remember what each counter does and means
I'll go for (A) as well. | |

| A is for "I hope I don't make an XXX of myself"
peace out | |

| “A”, Add a 2nd Processor
This may help:
---------------
Processor> %Processor Time: the time spends responding to system requests, above 80%, so 95% is (high).
System> Processor Queue Length: counts ready threads only, not threads that are running, processor queue of greater than 2 threads generally indicates processor congestion, 3 is high
Memory> Page/sec: should be between 4 and 5, so 10 is also (high).
Physical Disk> Current Disk Queue Length: number of disk requests waiting for processing, less than 2, so it’s normal.
Paging File> %Usage: over 99% of usage you need to add more memory, here we have 25%, normal.

| Oh my this IS bad. Real bad! Sorry spid looks like your only option will be buy a brand new computer, I will of course be glad to take the old one of your hands. No charge, really.
Alright so it's A. Probably won't be enough better to go with my suggestion | |

And the answer is......A
%ProcessorTime of 95 and a Processor Queue Length of 3 indicte that the processor is the bottleneck.
Memory Pages/sec is a little high as well which could get you to answer with "B", and memory is often the cause of the bottleneck in these type of questions, but too much is pointing to the processor as the culprit.
I did forget to mention in the question that the system supported 2 processors, but seeing that no-one questioned that, I just let it ride. If the system did not support two processors, upgrading the exisiting processor would be something to consider.
Thanks go out to Slinky and Adam Salam for the additional info they provided. |
