Kinda embarrased to ask this, but I can't figure out how to get my printer working with this configuration!

I have two computers. A Win2k and a WinME. Both are connected via a DSL router and 802.3.

These two computers are seeing each other just fine, and file sharing is not a problem.

My printer is physically connected to my WinME computer via USB.

The USB ports on the Win2k are all used up, so physically hooking the printer directly to the Win2k computer is not an option at this time.

Okay, problem is this... Win2k can "see" the shared printer, but it's not printing!

Driver issue, right?!! Well, I installed the printer driver package for Win2k, on the Win2k computer. But that just creates a new virtual printer on the Win2k printer.

How do I change the driver on the Win2k computer so it is able to use the printer that is physically attached to my WinME computer?

Did you install the printer on the Win2K box as a "Network" printer?

Yes, I did install it as a network printer.

I believe my options were "local printer" or "network printer". I chose "network printer" because the printer is physically connected to the WinME computer.

As it's port option, it is using the UNC (Universal Naming Convention). It was something like \\computer1\compaq_printer.

Now, if the printer had been able to be physically installed on the Win2k computer, there would be no problem, as Win2k allows you to install more than one driver, for multiple operating systems. If that had been the case, then when the WinME computer had installed the shared printer, it would have downloaded a driver for WinME at the same time.

But I can't figure out how to do this, vice-versa!

Did you configure the port to TCP/IP?

You will need print permissions set correctly.

I'd like to, but the printer is physically connected to the WinME computer, and WinME doesn't offer the choice you just mentioned.

As far as I know, it's "share, or don't share".

Hi czeddie,

I would say that there's no point to install driver for your printer on your Win2K machine since the printer is physically attached to the WinME machine.

I've heard that when sharing network printer you may be able to include the driver for machines running previous OS attached to the network by checking the little checkboxes (depending on how many different version of OSs you have on your network you have to tick that many checkboxes). In this case you don't have to install driver for other machines on the network.

Unfortunately your WinME machine may not have the driver written for Win2K. If your printer connected to Win2K machine it would be fine since when you hook other computers to the network and share your printer you may include drivers for most of the previous OSs. You may give it a go but I don't think it would work.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Phil.

Have you check that File and Print sharing for Microsoft being enabled? I think WinME and 98 would need this feature in order to share files and printer.

Phil.

Thanks, everyone!

Yes, "file and print sharing" on the WinME computer has been enabled. I have verified this by reading WinME files on my Win2k computer.

The printer is online and printing fine in WinME.

Is there no hope?

The UNC port that you put for the printer - try using it in run to access a share. Copy it exactly as you wrote it.
