| Just a quick note to say that i have finally managed to set up a small home lab and how i would recommend that anyone who doesn't have access to a windows 2000 network should do the same!
I managed to find an old computer that didn't cost anything so it wasn't that expensive to set up, but i am reaping the benefits already, all the excercises in the books suddenly make sense!
It really does make a big difference to your understanding if you can get 'hands on', and i am sure it will give me more of a chance to pass!!!

| That's great to hear hairy. It makes a world of difference from reading the book to actually seeing and doing the exercises. It definitely fleshes out the concepts. You may get around to adding more computers to your humble network. | |

| Hopefully!!!
The more the merrier!

| Heh, I forgot to add that once you set up your home network, its a nice diversion from your cert studies to invite some friends over and do a little LAN party. Maybe with Unreal Tournament or Starcraft. | |

| Whatchya talkin' about, diverting from your cert studies! LOL!
Couldn't agree with you more Hairy. I just got done playing around with NAT and ICS on Server. Much more interesting than reading about it.

| Hi everyone,
I set up my home lab recently for my study purpose. I got Win2K Server (evaluation version) installed on my desktop. Every thing was fine except some minor problem with setting up Active Directory.
A few days ago I installed Visual Basic 6.0 in my computer and soon after that I got this nasty Msg when booting up my computer.
CTSvcCDA.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "ox77f8cee7" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
If I click on OK and continue logging in, everything is fine. However By clicking CANCEL the computer will go to VB.
A trip to MS Knowledge Base gave me the recommendation to install SP3. I tried it but after waiting for over 30 mins nothing happens.
Any quick resolution for this. Honestly say, I don't want to install the SP3 if I don't have to since I will Install the OS again and again in the future (to practice), and I don't want to wait for several hours every time I install SP since I only have dial up connection.
Many thanks in advance.

| You ought to try getting the SP on a CD-ROM. Have someone download and burn it for you. The evals are shipping with SP2 so you could also order one of those packages from MS.
VB6 should also have its SP`s applied to it to run correctly.

| Philip, I too had problems upgrading to SP3.
My problems stemmed from attempting to go through Microsofts Win2k Update site where it looks over your computer and suggests an upgrade for you, then you begin the upgrade processs.
It would start it's download, but never actually begin downloading.
What I did, was to find a place where I could download JUST the upgrade. All you're going to do is download the SP3, not begin the process of upgrading to SP3. I'm probably not making myself clear. But you just download the SP3 file itself.
That was MUCH faster for me, and I just burned the file onto a CD for future use and so I wouldn't have to download it ever again.
Hope I helped somewhat.

| What study material are you using ? | |
| hairy51 2002-11-24, 9:00 am |
| I've got syngress media core books, and course material from computeach.
I definately wouldn't recommend computeach, its a waste of time and money. I also use various web sites etc. whenever i want to read up about something.
This is the most helpful site i have found by far!

| depends on what you want to spend. p133 systems will run win2k just nicely and can cost less than £100.
at the moment my lab has only two computers networked. but when i get my act together and buy some patch cable to use with this 5-port hub i got given by an old friend, i should have three and maybe add my mac too!

I just got SP3 today from MS website and I will install it later today. This time I was lucky enough to have T1 so it was fast. Things will be fine, I hope.
Actually the problem with the error Msg could be fix if I uninstall the sound card driver. However if I uninstall my sound card driver another message would pop up telling me that a service had failed and go to event viewer for more details.
Now that I have SP3 for network installation from Microsoft I can use it in the future, I definately sure that I will have to install Win2K again and again so it helps....
Thanks czeddie,
Regards,

there's some condensation in my lab. really nice when you are delving into deepest depths of deep file and printer sharing and you get an eggcup-full of water landing on your neck and flowing down the inside of your ben sherman.

| Hi Hairy, What setup are you running ie: Server/Pro, Workgroup/Domain? would really like to know. Anyone else have a Setup that would allow you to run most labs for 210/215 would be much appreciated.

| I am running server and pro, set up as a domain. I got an eval copy of server (I couldn't afford the real thing!) and it is pretty handy for most of the practice labs.
you can play around with it and not really do to much damage!
| Kidvegas19 2002-12-04, 11:33 pm |
| For two computers, dual boot each with a copy of pro and server. That way you can mix and match as you need. For exercises that call for 2 servers, you have it. Same for labs that are client/server. It gives you the flexibility to run workgroup or domain. It also helps you in your documentation, because pretty soon you forget what exactly you did on what install on which machine! | |

| I would love to do this. I have had problems in the past with the DNS stuff. Do you have a legal ip or using a 10 scheme? I have all the software and to many machines not to do this. Any help much thanks.
Best Regards

Hi Doc, Welcome to the forum.
If you're talking about setting up a home lab, any private IP address scheme will work for you. I used class C private for my test lab at home.
Class A private address range:
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
Class B private address range:
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
Class C private address range:
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
