Author Cable unplugged

I have a laptop and a desktop connected up via two ethernet cards and a crossover cable. I had them working fine a while ago, but i have just tried to set it up again, and i am constantly being told that the network cable is unplugged. (Which it isn't) I went and bought another cable to see if that was the problem, but it is still the same.
According to the device manager all of the cards are ok and working fine.
Anyone got any bright ideas

What OS is on each machine?

Are they members of the same workgroup?

Is this a domain environment?

one is win2k server and one is win2k pro, at the mo they are both in a work group. It is set to use automatic ip addressing, should i assign static addresses?

They are both in A workgroup or the SAME workgroup?

I would at least assign a static IP to the server - you will eventually need to run DCPromo to make it a DC. Create and authorize a DHCP scope on the server and join the workstation to the domain. If you haven't already got DNS Services running on the network, they will be installed during the DCPromo process.

There should be a lab exercise that more adequately steps you through the process in your 215 book.

Right, Basically i want to set up a 2 computer lab in order to enhance my studies.

I have

1 laptop running win2k server eval. edition
-pcmcia ethernet adapter

1 desktop running win2k pro
-pci network adapter

currently both os are installed and working fine but i cannot get them to talk to each other.

I would greatly appreciate some help in setting this up, as i feel like a bit of an idiot considering the course i am doing!!!

If you could point me in the right direction and help me get started it would be brilliant.

Have you tried the usual loopback test and pinging ips and stuff? Do you have a handy cable tester?

Firstly, are you getting any link lights on the network cards when they are connected?

Also what have you changed since they were last working? Has anything been installed?

Can you ping, loopback or anything?

Are there any problems in device manager?

If you are using a Workgroup, assign static IP addresses if there are none showing in TCP/IP properties. Also netbeui is handy for Workgroups.

nice things to check..... good...

try from low to high order....

check link leds ON
check localhost responsing
try with private class c static ip and correct mask
ping each to other....

Right, both led's are on on the cards, and i am now getting a connection. Don't know why.

Both ping the loopback address ok.

When i try and ping the other computer, i get a request timed out message.

Does it matter what ip addresses i use?

Both Server and Work Station Should Have
Same Subnet Mask, ip address should be in same subnet or they will not be able to talk.... Since they are on same segment

thats ok, they are in the same subnet.

But they are still not finding each other.

192.10.10.1 and 192.10.10.2 subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

is this correct?

just for fun change your IP addresses to:

192.168.123.1 and
192.168.123.2

leave the subnet mask the same (255.255.255.0) and try again.

Since you are using a crossover cable have you checked that the speed and duplex settings are the same. For the sake of troubleshooting this, I'd set them both to a speed of 10 and a duplex setting of half.

You stated that you pinged the local loopback (127.0.0.1) successfully, so that indicates that tcp/ip should be working properly. You also stated that the systems can ping themselves, which is good, and you have verified the subnet mask is correct and both systems are on the same subnet.

The problem happens when you ping the other system. You have no hub to worry about, so now we are down to the crossover cable. You stated that you purchased a crossover cable, so I'd have to assume at this point that it is not the cable. I'm thinking at this point it is either a driver issue, which you'd think device manager would have picked up on or it's a speed/duplex issue with the cards.

I would try setting the speed and duplex manually as opposed to auto-detect and see what happens.

If that doesn't work, you may want to entertain the idea of completely uninstalling and re-installing the NICs on both systems as well. I've seen this fix quirky issues like you are experiencing as well. In fact, I remember having the exact same issue with a Win98 box a couple of years ago, PC could ping local loopback and ping itself with no problem, but couldn't ping any other system on the network. Ports on the hub were fine as well. Everything was indicating that this system should be able to communicate on the network. I completely removed the NIC, rebooted the system without the NIC in it, shut the system down and then re-installed the NIC. The system worked fine after that. I just filed the whole thing in my things that make you go hmmmmm? folder.

Just some thoughts.

The laptop card is a pcmcia card, so i ejected it from the system and replaced it again, and i had a connection briefly, before it informed me that the cable is unplugged.

With the desktop, i shut down and removed the card, then tried a different card which didn't work at all, i got a code 1 error, so i put the other back in and it has made no difference.

I reinstalled the drivers on the laptop and the desktop. It now says that the connection is ok on the laptop, but the desktop is still saying network cable unplugged...
