| “Before upgrading Win 9x to Win 2k Professional you should ensure you have a recovery path if the upgrade fails (example back up your computer before you begin the upgrade process)”
This quote is taken from a Win 2k study guide. It does not elaborate.
How would you back up a computer so that you could restore it if installation failed without using Win 9x installation CD?
How would the backup process differ, when doing the upgrade on your home computer compared to say a desktop in a networked environment?

| I believe they mean having a backup plan along the lines of a complete system backup via tape, etc... or possibly creating an image of your current system using a third party utility like Norton Ghost. | |

| Meaning you have some sort of contingency plan in place in the upgrade were to fail. (eg: full back-up) | |

| Definitely create an image of the HD before upgrading.
Ghost is ideal for this.
If you were to backup in this way, the backup process is the same for networked or in fact anything as you are just taking a mirror image of the files on the drive.
Windows 98 has its own backup facility, which is scrapped in later versions of Windows (Microsoft control to stop copying)but then Ghost is better than this anyway.

in the case if the upgrade fail, what you can do?. you lost everything. as a contingence plan, before any upgrade or software installation you must make a backup of your system.
as people say here, make a ghost image of the partition or the entire disk is the most functional and best practice option.

| Ghost is the best option to back up a hard drive image I've seen. One of my instructors in school told us we could run the 2000 upgrade install from Add\Remove Programs in case we needed to uninstall later, but I've never done it. Maybe someone else has a thought on this? | |
