| Any ideas on this:-
Had to re-install win98 on an old computer as it was constantly hanging up after someone played around with it.
Went through setup process, got nearly to the end, then it hung up again.
Tried again.
This happened about three times, so i re-formated the hard drive and tried again.
Still no joy.
To try and rule out hardware problems, i re formatted the drive again and tried installing win2k from boot disks.
As soon as the setup started, after scanning the hardware etc i got this message:-
\hall.dll (Error code 7)
Setup cannot continue.
Has anyone encountered this before/know what is wrong?
Appreciate any ideas, as i have run out!!!
PS.The computer does meet the minimum hardware requirements.

| If this PC is about 3 years old... The first thing I check is the CPU fan... often the CPU fan goes that is what causes intermitten hangs, as the CPU fails... over prolong of CPU over heat, then the CPU is shot... If your BIOS support temp monitor, check the temp... good luck | |

| If your BIOS supports booting from a CD, change the boot order and try installing directly from the Win2k CD.
I did some research and if your mobo has a VIA chipset, you may get this error. There seems to be a possiblility of corrupt files getting copied to the Hard Drive (mobo chipset issue).

| Had a similar problem with a 98 machine.
The original OS was crashing so I reinstalled. It continued to show error messages and crash. I reinstalled using a different install CD, it still crashed. At this point I assumed it was the hard drive. I reformatted and reinstalled- it continued to crash. I had the motherboard tested- it came out fine. I was about to ditch it when I decided to replace the memory and viola- that was the problem. The reinstall worked fine and it runs good now.
I never received any error messages or indications that the memory was bad- but it appears to have been the case. For 30 bucks I was able to salvage the machine fo r afew more years.

| Cheers for your help guys, i'll look into it again.
One other thing i didn't mention was that the user in question had also swapped cd-drives with another computer.
I don't know if this will effect it at all,

| I also had similar issues and it turned out to be a memory issue also. Once I got new memory into the machine, it worked fine. | |

| It is unlikely that there is a CD drive defective in such a manner that is not writing a particular line recorded on a CD. Before I would belive that I would belive that the CD was damaged (scratched) in a particular place and that data were not being rewritten.
It could be that whenever the person installing the CD drive installed it he did not ground himself properly and the electrostatic discharge damaged the memory module.

| Load the default BIOS settings prior to install your OS....
Clean your memory slots and memory cards...
Remove all your cards and re-insert the cards after suscefully OS installation (i.e: add on audio card, nic, modem, etc)
Disable USB on the BIOS
Check temperature of your system
Try with a diferent Video card (this is imoprtant)
My recomendation for installation:
Boot with win98 boot disk.
fdisk
format
copy cabs to hd
install from hd
hope this help.

| Dear hairy51
Usually when you got a massage during the format session
in win2kpro installation that include the hall.dll massage
99% that you have hardware problem probably with your Hard Drive, you will need to replace for a new HD (or you can check if there is any problem with your cd media or device)
