Windows 2000 boot problems

| Tell me if you guys have seen anything like this before.
I boot a laptop up. THe begining phase of POST begins, I can enter the bios at this stage but before the boot.ini builds and the list of OSs displays, some funny characters display and I'm unable to do anything except restart. I try updating the bios, and fix the boot sector with the RC, from the cd which don't help. Than I try booting the computer with the 2k cd in the drive and it boots up fine, with no changes or problems with the existing OS.
I have the same problem when I boot up without the cd now, and no problems when I boot with the cd.
Any ideas? | |

| Normally if you get to the stage where you talked about, it is changing from text modem to gui mode, thus the video bios may have something to do with it. See if you can update the video bios. good luck. | |

| I had a weird problem once where I had a dual boot situation with Win2k\Win98 and 2k wouldn't boot without a bootdisk. It was like it couldn't read boot.ini without the disk(or CD in your case). Dumb Question, Can you sys c: with an NTFS formatted bootdisk\rdisk? You might try that, or edit the boot.ini. I just reinstalled the O/S myself. | |

I've never heard of flashing the video BIOS, not saying you can't though. I don't know about laptops, but in desktops the video BIOS banner is usually the first thing you see followed shortly thereafter by the mobo BIOS. | |

| Actually the BIOS banner comes up fine, the problem comes between the banner and the list of available OSs. | |

| sounds like a bad sector on the HD, or corrupted systems files. If you've got another W2k Pc copy the boot.ini, NTDETECT.COM, NTLDR and try booting from that |
