I am currently enrolled in a Microsoft 2000 class and we have been conducting all of our labs and even loaded our operating systems on simulation software called VMWare. Since we began using this software our instructor can no longer use net support and we have run across a whole lot of problems with the labs. Does anyone have any experience with this software and does anyone know if Microsoft even allows third party training tools for their classes?

Hi ccaya, I've been using VMWare for quite a while and it is a very helpful tool, but there are limitations. I'm not sure why you no longer have net support, it could be related to VMWare's internal DHCP addressing. There is a configuration file in the VMWare program directory where the scope can be changed to match that of the network you're running on. (I'm at work and can't remember the file name right off, so if you can't find it post a reply and I'll look when I get a chance.) Or, it could be the network type in the setup. If one VM is set to NAT, they all have to be set to NAT, or there will be problems. I generally use the default and have yet to experience difficulties. Also, be sure to load the VMWare tools once the OS is loaded. Makes a big difference.

Other quirks: You can install Win2K Server, but it can't do RIS, as it requires a second partition. I'm not sure if VMWare allows multiple partition, I haven't tried it (but I have a server running RIS so it hasn't been an issue). I have been able to use RIS to setup W2K Pro in a Virtual Machine, works well. Have also used VMs to do things like GPOs (where I don't want to fool around with my workstation) and these also work well. Haven't used it for DHCP or DNS and technically they should work, but that internal DHCP could be a problem.

I don't know if M$ allows 3rd party stuff, but would be willing to bet they don't. If anything, they would use their own emulation software as part of the test process. Using VMWare simply lets me have a couple more PCs on my network than I would otherwise have, and gives me the ability to do things to them that I don't really want to be doing to my own workstation (I know how to install W2K, don't want to be re-doing my PC every week if I don't have to).

The VMWare help is very comprehensive and well written and that is what I've been using to get it up and running. I don't know if there are any 3rd party books on it, but that's something you might try. Of course, posting here will no doubt get you some help. Keep us posted.

I see no reason not to use VMWARE as each virtual machine simulates a standalone PC. I have a 2Kpro virtual machine running inside 2k server and it does everything a standalone PC does. Can you define '..can no longer use net support..' and any other problems?
Incidentally, why does your training provider use VMWARE and not install standalone systems - on my courses we used hard drive removeable trays and simply swapped these in and out when necessary.
It seems they are unnecessarily complicating things.

I just downloaded the e-val to try this out and I'm have some trouble with it to, but I havn't read up on it much so I'm sure it's me! Funny thing is when I went up to take my 70-210 that I failed, I mentioned that I was having a hard time studying because I only have one PC. That when the Admin. told me about it! Ain't that a kick in the Balls!

Thank you everyone for the info.

I agree ccaya, that vmware can be limited and would much prefer switching out hard drives and locking off the classroom from the rest of the world for the first 15 - 20 classes. Using vmware should in no way hinder your studying and passing of both the 70-210 & 70-215 though
Make sure you take your time with the tests as many questions are wordy and it's easy to miss the relative information (at least the info that is relative to the right answer). If you don't know the answer, make your best guess and mark the question for review. If you have enough time, go back through all of the questions as you might have learned something during the test that could change an earlier answer.
Good Luck!

Hey thanks for the advice almightytod. I talked to Mr. B and he said that he set up an entire network with Mr. Stillman fine and they used VMWare. However, everyone I have talked to said that it (VMWare) does not like to be used as a router. And you can create a problem not know about it and the problems will compile on top of each other. Friday is Test day.
